Don't forget to link your Delta account to SPG and United to Marriott!
You automatically get the highest status from either across both and you can move points between the two. So choosing one over the other doesn't seem to matter too much.
You earn status separately, so you're best to pick a side to earn. But you can easily transfer points between so redeeming can be more fluid (but only spg gives qualifying stays/nights when redeeming points)
You're better off with SPG over Marriott if you're starting from scratch. You also get way more value at the top end. Ex. After 75 nights at SPG, it's 4 SPG points per night (12 Marriott points) vs 10 at SPG hotels. You get 500 welcome points for green choice and welcome amenity (1500 Marriott) while Marriott hotels give 1000 Marriott points. Literally no value staying at Marriott right now if you have a choice.
The points are "separate but equal" you can gain status on either/both Marriott/SPG and the highest level will status match (but not combine I.e. 10 nights at one and 10 nights at the other do not combine to count as 20 nights) They have a fixed exchange rate too 3:1, Marriott:SPG
You should do the math and figure out which chain will net you the most points then set up a challenge with that chain for platinum, and start staying
Thanks for the clarity and suggestions. My 2017 travel begins on the first business day of the year so I want to be ready.
Just linked accounts and got upgraded to Gold w/ Marriott due to SPG status. Wish I still had Platinum but I'll take it.
Points are combined, nights are not
