Since we are WFH in the US, thinking of flying to India to family and WFH from there. Any rules, specifically for L-visa holders, that prevent us from working remotely from a different country?

I know for deloitte, you cannot WFH from a second country due to Tax implications. You’ll need to charge time to a cost center and your cannot charge it to an India CC.

It’s more complicated. The firm will have to pay taxes for you in India including PF and LTA! Setting up payroll, tax admin fees could cost $10/$20k per month over and above your salary! Don’t do it!

All intl flights to India suspended from Sunday onwards. Depending on port of entry, can have mandatory testing which classifies H/M/L symptoms and prescribes self quarantine or hospital quarantine as needed (at least that was the case when we arrived in Bengaluru 2 days back). Plus there are tax implications on working outside the US - something your tax team can clarify

In Bengaluru, international arrivals are made to complete immigration (but not let out of airport). They are all gathered and sent to a nearby private hospital where a check up (not testing for covid19) is done. For low risk or no symptoms, self quarantine for 14 days is prescribed. For high risk cases, they are placed in the hospital for observation and testing.

Also, it might be an issue if the nature of your job involves any type of data - the firm i work for has strict rules around this due to GDPR

It is super complicated for tax purposes. The tax code in the US looks for your city and state and you charge the US time code to that city and state. First complication would be using a US time code in India, followed by a requirement to pay taxes in India, and then taking you off temporarily US payroll. setting that up and taking you off payroll in US is an expensive process. That is 10k worth of some cost there.

Thanks K1

Fact of the matter is, most of us have worked from India or other places, and logged out hours as working from home (state in the US). There have been no issues with it thus far. It’s a grey area, technically/legally you’re not supposed to do it, but if situations/circumstances warrant it, I’ve done it with Partner approval (and without). So you do you, and it depends on your risk appetite. We are all adults, and are responsible for our actions.

Yeah agreed. This could be a long period and probably not worth the risk.

Why would you risk flying?

OP, you cannot work remote from India due to tax implications. And this applies to both client serving and internal EY activities. That’s EY policy. I’ve dealt with several questions of this sort over the years and have had many discussions with HR to understand policy. You’ll be placed on Leave of Absence, will have to buy Additional Days Off, or will have to extinguish your vacation days should you choose to leave the US.

OP super dumb idea, sorry but why would you even risk going to india where there is zero precaution and people running around functions and morchas ? Value your life, stay home and be a responsible human, this isn’t a holiday

In the US on a visa and so worried about losing my job. It’s all I can think about. It’s hard to even get a new visa at this stage. Couldn’t easily go back to my country (got obligations here). ☹️

since moving to New York (a few months ago), I can’t stop spending money. I know some of that is paying for apartment related things but i’ve gone from paying my CC balance off every month to draining my savings and owing like 10K on my CCs. i’m starting to feel overwhelmed and not sure where to start. i feel so much pressure to look great, have nice things, reconnect with people and I’m worried this will snowball. has anyone else experienced this?

My visa stamp expires Aug 2017, but I have a valid h1b approval till 2019. In this situation can I travel to Puerto Rico in November 2017, from the Northeast US? Anyone who has experience with this situation?

Hello, hoping someone will be able to helo share their perspective- I am currently on H1B with my current employer. Got a job offer from a new employer and they have transferred my visa and that’s approved as well. I am planning to resign soon. My last day at my current firm will be 10/08. I am also scheduled for a marriage based green card interview on 10/06. Will that be a problem? Like if they ask where I work - I should respond my current employer, correct?

Traveling internationally via LAX. Don’t have status with any airlines but have the CSR and the Amex platinum through work. But looks like neither card has lounges that are operational at the moment. Any other options to get some work done. I probably will be at the airport for at least six hours before departure because of back to back meetings.

can you leave the US for Visa stamping while your H1B amendment is still pending? (assuming I have gotten the receipt from USCIS that they have received my amendment application)

My h1b visa is expiring April end 2021. If I want to go back to my home country and get stamped around Q4 2020, can I still get stamped given the short period of h1b left? If so will I only get stamped for several months?

On h1b visa and have an offer from outside. Other firm has started the transfer process & and it will 2 more weeks to get approval. So basically have 4 weeks before joining. I have very good relationship with PPMD and SM. Also I am a key person on the project with good rapport with clients. I really want to let the Partner / SM know that I am leaving in 4 weeks, so that transition can happen smoothly. What are the cons of giving a notice in advance, what's the worst that can happen?

I accepted an offer but also just started a new project, what’s the best approach here to decide time to put in 2 weeks? Starting visa transfer with new employer next week, aiming to join early Sep.
