People are going to lie to you and tell you that they have a full life in NYC while also having a dog, but their friends and dog will tell you otherwise. Dog owners either neglect their dogs, constantly pass it off to others, or are recluses. NYC is not a good place for dogs.
Would rather be a pampered NYC dog than one living outdoors in all weather on a heavy chain somewhere in Alabama.
I moved to nyc w a 1 year old - they adjust quickly. Just don’t make it a big deal when leaving and work on separation time. I now am able to leave him for 6 hours and not be worried. Just get exercise!
Daycare is a great option however it adds up, especially in NYC.
I have two dogs with severe separation anxiety. Their trainer recommended leaving them with enrichment toys whenever i’m out. So far they’ve really been enjoying snuffle matts! For nights I know I’ll be gone for a while i’ll usually book an hour long wag walk for them.
I also have a furbo which has been a total game changer for me since it alerts you of any unwanted behaviors such barking/howling/chewing etc. Whenever they start howling or crying i’ll usually toss them a few treats and that buys me some time.

I train my dog, and make it a point to leave to both get a breath of fresh air and let him stay alone to not make him too used to being around me. It takes a lot of work and patience but he does get better. If I do have long outings I do try to find accommodations for him.
A2 which is also another benefit to having a dog in NYC. It keeps them and us walking.
I usually hire someone to walk my dog when I leave him alone for more than 5 hours. If I know I’m going to be out late, I’ll have a friend or relative stay over.

You’re fine if you’re home every day with your dog. He can be home alone at night if he’s hiusetrained.
meet people in your building. i have my neighbors key and she has mine. we help each other out. met someone at the dog park too and we swap. friends help and family of course... plus rover. no different then your last city. also my dog is crate trained and never ever left alone in my apartment without being in his crate. I don't use daycare because it's not my dogs vibe. I make sure to give him 10k steps a day and he's a happy pup.
