Single mom with a 12 month old. Would you stay at a firm that knows you (been here for over a decade) and will be flexible if life happens, or move to another firm at an immediate raise plus a 2-3 year intense track to be promoted?

Depends on the salary bump (enough for nanny, etc. )

like

Sounds like you need a nanny and the ability to pay them overtime, or have your parents pick up slack there.

Personally, I wouldn’t. At this age and for the next few years, there are so many random sick days, forgotten bag at home requiring you to go back, crying nights, etc., that if they cannot give you some grace when life happens, you’re going to be so miserable and stressed.

And is that really a company you want to invest your time in? Why should you expect their attitude about being inflexible for normal life situations to change once you are promoted?

Maybe if the raise is enough to pay for a full-time nanny it’s worth it, but I wouldn’t expect the situation to change once you are promoted.

Is the firm in consulting or industry? I left consulting for a promo and raise and had the same concerns. Turns out even with the added pressure of new firm / new team, people are way more understanding of “life” and everything that comes with it.

It’s another consulting firm.... I am happy to hear that! The current firm keeps telling me how my job is secure no matter what happens, life, recession, etc. but the new firm won’t be the same...

Fellow Deloitte single mom here. I have similar thoughts too, but whose to say you can’t have both! Deloitte has stated they want more women in leadership roles. Why not you?

I need to provide for my baby. But then I’m a bit concerned about if my elderly parents would stay healthy to provide consistent childcare.... the new firm wouldn’t understand if life gets difficult. It would be a pretty strict up or out.

3 years ago I asked for a compensation review/raise, went through what felt like a ridiculous 8 MONTH long process of defending why it was warranted, only to be told no. 3 months ago I asked again and it has gone nowhere. I should add that salary bands are kept secret and I have no clue what the range for my position is. There are a decent amount of benefits in my position, the biggest being WLB, which is what has kept me here for so long. But I’m getting frustrated. What would you do?

Hi friends, Got two offers. One with: Humana(Remote)[Insurance based company]and another with Mastercard(Hybrid) (Ofallon, MO)-need to relocate after 6 months. Both are for Senior software Engineer. Humana- TC= 155K, Mastercard-TC=175. Which is a better option, as talk are going on that, recession will happen soon. I’m confused to choose, as some say Insurance company doesn’t get effected with recession. Please suggest.

Hey everyone! I am a CPA, started at PwC, now the assistant controller at a small/medium sized Ag company. Thus far, the plan has been to follow the CFO path. But recently I have been longing for more social/client facing interactions. I am very extroverted. I love meeting and connecting with new people and would like to incorporate that into my career. Any thoughts on possible career paths that would combine my experience in accounting with a more socially fulfilling job?

Thanks I’m advance!
