Slalom new hire here. So we're supposed to have work/life balance. After billing 40 hours to the client, there's commute time and expectations of doing a bunch of Slalom training and socializing.

Be happy you don’t have to bill 50-60 hours to the client and do the same amount of commute time, training time, and socializing time...

Are you new to Slalom, or new to consulting altogether? That might change the advice you get here... if it’s the former, Slalom should be a much better W/L balance than your previous employer(s). If it’s the latter, YMMV based on your previous employment experience. If it’s you first full time job, it may take some time for you to get used to the expectations in client services.

Welcome to the world of consulting. Seems like your new to this world recommend that seek out a mentor to help you integrate. Good luck !!

like

The expectations and pressures on us are starting to look like those of the Big4 except without Big4 pay.

like

The “bunch of slalom stuff” is not expected and you should view it as personal social time. If you want to do it, do it. If you have other things to do, then do those other things. Yes it’s probably helpful for your career if you attend a lot of events, but pick one or two (or zero) things you are really interested in and skip the rest

like

Learn to say no. The training isn’t mandatory that I’m aware. If you find it interesting or think it might be beneficial, make time for it. I know people that have risen through the ranks that don’t participate in the social stuff. It’s also not mandatory.

like

But if I ace the midterm and final I don’t get a B because I think that going home and tucking my kids into bed is more important than attending another drunken, themed costume party with people I already spend 40 hours a week with.

We should be measured by important stuff like our ability to build trust with our clients that turn one-time engagements into long term partnerships or leaving a client better than we found them. If we need additional training to achieve that, I think that we should be interested and willing to develop and hone those skills but I also think the company should be willing to invest in its only asset by giving us some non-billable time to do that.

like

Socializing is totally optional - I have kids and often can’t engage. Might be worth discussing some WFH or working from Slalom options.

like

We have a finite number of hours in a day. It’s a game of math and prioritization based on your goal at Slalom. Good luck!

like

When new to an organization it is very important to socialize to help build your network. Training will definitely help you to understand the assets your company is providing so you can succeed in your role. But over all this is the expectation of being in the consultant world

Sounds like someone got hired right out of college... welcome to the real world champ!

This is joke right? Working full time requires full days, plus getting g there and back, training to shape you or prepare you, and socializing to connect the culture. Sounds like you’ve had a pampered life if these are complaints in your book.

Hi ,

I have been assigned to project in tcs. I will be introduced to client only when I complete certain certification. I have been asked to complete it within a week. I am trying my best and giving 4-5 hrs daily to prepare.

I am a little bit worried about this. Can someone tell me how does this impace the growth in tcs. If one doesn't complete a certification what actions are taken. I Joined last week. As I come from a product based company I have done certifications but there was no pressure
