Hire extra staff for the first season. I can’t even begin to describe the hell that a complete software change is. My firm went from pro system to gosystem when I was an experienced staff and it was miserable. Everything had to checked, information that would roll over was gone, so many little details that you never think about. All efficiency and software knowledge is gone and everyone will talk about how much better the old software was and waste time on complaining. You’ll find little things that your old software did that the new one doesn’t but you won’t find them until you start actually preparing the returns. It sucks, it’s miserable in year 1. Year 2 isn’t as bad and by year 3 they’ll have pretty much forgotten the old software.
Literally expect every return to take twice as long as it did before. Realization is going to tank, don’t even bring up profitability or realization to them. The best thing you can do is over staff and pray not too many jump ship.
At least you are using software.. I know people who are still running trial balances and journal entries in excel.
If you can, find some user groups or alliance firms who made the transition with the same software. They can be invaluable sources of solutions and tips.
Bite the bullet and commit to the process from the beginning. You will never get as much attention from the vendor as you get at purchase. Get things set up correctly from the get-go.
I moved to a firm two years after they bought the full suite from a major vendor. My predecessors didn't fully embrace this and the clean-up/relaunch has been much rougher than doing it right at the beginning.
