I've worked at the same engineering firm for 4 years. I'm currently making $161k with only a $750 bonus, but excellent vacation (4 weeks, cash out anytime, rolls over indefinitely), 45 hours a week. I have an interview with a recruiter at Guidehouse this week for a Technical Project Manager role. It seems to be focused in the government space and requires a security clearance. What sort of salary and benefits could I expect for this sort of role at Guidehouse?

There's a lot here, but the reason that your SM asks you really hard questions is twofold 1) they are making sure that you have thought through all aspects of the work to make sure that your work properly represents your firm, 2) they are anticipating the questions the client might ask.
It takes experience and time to get to the place where you're asking these questions of your own work and incorporating the answers. Until then it's the senior manager's job to be pushing you in these areas.
^ Because a like doesn’t underscore enough, this is the read you should have. Not that he’s micromanaging
1. Because it’s quarantine so we are leaning in more heavily 2. Pushing you with questions as a forcing mechanism to improve work product 3. Its OK to ask if s/he likes your work. 4. Also OK to say you’re spending additional time fling xyz prep.
Fair point, thanks P1. So under what circumstances would u push work product - cuz most SM/Ps I work with are really hands off
Grammar, for one.
He’s trying to help you grow, lol. Could be providing feedback through your coach as a more “official” channel. Lean into it
I’d say you’ve either had bad experiences or you‘ve got a good one.
Why is no one asking why the SM is skipping so many levels to take an interest in this C’s work? What is your team structure?
I like to think I don’t ask harsh questions, but I would have daily expectations about what I think you could accomplish and review your work together for (hopefully) constructive feedback.
He's breaking you down to build you up. Don't fight the process ...only prolongs it.
Thanks SM1 - I think this is exactly what I needed to hear / do. You’re right about there’s so much here for me to gain. I shouldn’t let it go to waste.
Thanks for taking the time to write this, and trust that you’re a good SM! ;) this really helped shift my mindset.
That’s normal
Lol it’s not my typical project and I do struggle sometimes. Guess I’m doomed
