I know no one is exempt from getting laid off or fired. However are there non-technical roles that are more "recession proof" than others?

Considering an offer to go from firm (4 YOE) to become a privacy/product counsel for a tech company (non-faang). One concern for me is the potential of a recession in late 22 into 23 with the fed rate hikes. My fear is if that happens, me being on the chopping block as new in house counsel. If I stayed at the firm, I feel reasonably secure as an associate of not being laid off due to the market. How do in house counsel positions typically fare during lay off cycles? Any experiences to share?

AITA. I was hired in 2019 by an individual to handle her wrongful termination case on an hourly fee basis. I usually work on contingency but this client made about 35k/yr and found a new job for less money right after she was fired. After paying around 17k in attorney’s fees she runs out of money and pays me 500 every few months but even that eventually stops. We end up winning a jury trial and appeal. My fees are more than the judgement. AITA for taking the full judgement to cover my fees?

Hi, I'm graduating with an MPA this month, and I'm having trouble getting through the application process for jobs in the public and non-profit sectors. For context, I got laid off last year, and before that, I was with an organization where I worked for five years as a program coordinator. I'm looking for general advice. What the current climate for jobs is, the best strategies to apply, and the best resources or tools that might help.

I was very successful as an internaional sales exec at a startup for 15 years before we were bought by a large publicly traded company. The culture shift was dramatic, as was the way that I was expected to work. I was laid off a tortuous 3 years after the buyout.

While I was in some ways relieved (put me out of my misery!) I spiralled pretty hard and after a while started working PT jobs, gig type stuff, etc. while I figured things out, and healed from burnout.

The company I work for (as a 1099 contractor) failed to have me complete a W-9. Therefore, they do not have my tax id number, but have already wire transferred me 10 months worth of pay (in exchange for 10 months worth of work).


Now, layoffs are happening. Just curious...what would happen if I never give them a W-9 or my tax ID number...

Brand Strategy/Planning roles aren't typical in PR. So every new Account hire arrives with no experience working with a Strategist. I'm tired of explaining/showing my role adds necessary value. I love strategy, but I have an offer at another agency to move into Account as Group SVP. They want to "customize" the role for my experience, but I'm afraid it will just be on paper and people will expect me to know things I just won't. I can't afford to be fired. Thoughts?
