In your contract it probably says something along the lines of "and perform other duties as specified by the district or principal." Fair? No. Legal? Yes.
Our contract specifies if we have to take on more students on a particular day for coverage, or if a regular class has more than a certain number of students, we get extra pay. I think it would all depend on your contract. I know ours pretty decently since I am a building rep.
As 1 of 2 SPED teachers at my school, we had to work together administering state tests to the kids with IEPs every day for 3 weeks straight. We knew we weren’t getting extra pay for that, but it made a huge negative impact on our ability to provide services for our students here at the end of the school year when they needed us the most.
So extra work.. extra risk, but no extra pay? Yeah I don’t think so
Same thing happens in Virginia each year. We can’t unionize and our contracts leave us at the mercy of our districts. We were required to do 80 hrs of PD between July 4th and Aug 2nd last year and could do nothing about it!!! Our contracts even basically said they would pay us if funds were available, if they weren’t our pay was subject to change. Some things are changing at the state level this year and we will have way more rights......and we haven’t seen contracts!!! We usually get them in February.
