I fuckin LOOOVE associate retreats. My firm is sending the seniors to Vegas this year. It’s gonna be an absolute shit show and I cant wait.

like

AA1, are you hiring? I want billable credit for the mandatory 2.5 day retreat we had this year!

Not mandatory. Hella fun. Count towards billables

In my experience, mandatory, mostly boring meetings and absolutely do not count towards billables. Sooo, I guess it’s firm specific.

In my experience, mandatory, mix of boring meetings and desperation drinking (it’s a trap!). Does not count towards billables.

my experience (all pre-pandemic) is that they are mandatory if you're junior, less so as you get more senior. An opportunity for the firm to spoon feed you more kool-aid on your time (meaning, not billable). But you can make it work for you by networking with others you may eventually work with or whose help you could use.

Counts towards billables and super fun. If I were a single woman I def would get for belligerently drunk and f a coworker from another office but alas. Still fun though!

Recently I was let go from a position I successfully commandeered for 3 years. With the world of hiring now days I have applied to positions that fit my qualifications and reach out to recruiters to never hear a peep back. I decided to research this and see on average it takes 6-12 weeks to hire a new employee. I actively peruse positions below a minimal salary for myself because I want to work and provide. If anyone has advice or suggestions please let me know.

When we’re all comparing/complaining about hours at the end of the year are we including pro bono hours in that total? I’m nearing 2050 billables for the year but I have another 500 pro bono hours that should be added on. At the same time, I keep hearing about all these people straight billing 2,400+. Trying to determine if I should’ve tried to pick up more billable work to stay in the middle of the pack (i.e. not interested in partnership, just trying not to get canned).

Never Google “Supra or infra” again!

I admit, as a fifth year big law associate it has taken me way too long to find a good memory devise for whether Supra or infra means “see above” or “see below.” But I found it and now I’ll share it with my other Latin-vocabulary-challenged fishies.

“Supra” has the word “up” in it. As in: see up! Boom. Done. You’re welcome.

I’m a mid level. Something that has baffled me and been on my min for a while: have you noticed that some partners/counsel/seniors don’t know the most basic part of a transaction? Like the basic rules for the most regular filings. I don’t mind looking up the rules and giving them the answers but what is mildly infuriating is sometimes if I’m a bit rusty or don’t know about a more obscure rule, they make me feel like I’m inexperienced or be like how can you not know this, when in fact they ask me

On pace to bill 2250 for the second year in a row at my amlaw 50 firm. But the firm is not paying market salaries (10%-20% below), and the bonuses are below market. The people are nice, I feel like there are good growth opportunities and a legitimate shot to make partner, but is that enough reason to stay here? Feeling like I should just move to a market comp firm if I’m going to be working this much consistently (4/5 year).
