I used a midwife group - they rotated appointments between different providers so you meet everyone. You never know who will be on call when you deliver!
I’m seeing an OB/GYN group that has midwives and OBs, but I haven’t seen an OB yet and I’m at 22
weeks. I’m going to be asking about that at my next appointment—my office has cut down the number of my appointments due to COVID, and it’s kind of messing with their model of meeting everyone so I’m prepared for whoever ends up delivering my baby.
Definitely not unheard of, my old OB-GYN does this. I switched before my first appointment for personal reasons but your first visit really doesn't need to be with a doc. They just ask you your family history, if you feel safe at home, give you an order for blood work to check your hCg levels, and then answer any questions you have.
First pregnancy here too, I was surprised during my first visit too, they said it's with a nurse practitioner and next visit onwards would be with OBGYN
You don’t actually have to see an OB until your last trimester (*edit: you can be followed by a GP until then)
Pro
My OB won’t see patients until the 12 week appointment, it’s a nurse practitioner until then.
However, the practice called to let me know my first visit will be with midwife as OBGYN dont have any appointments available. First baby, and very confused how the OBGYN practice work. Any help would be most appreciated by a very confused, worried pregnant women!!! Thank you
Chief
It's not atypical. You will probably see both of them throughout your pregnancy, and have a 50/50 that either is on call when you deliver.
Thank you! Very helpful insights. I feel more confident about seeing midwife for the first appointment.
Update: The midwife cancelled 25 minutes before the appointment citing she can only see patients at 10 week. Almost certain that no OBGYN wants me as a patient. Not a crier but ended up shedding few tears thinking about any complications that may arise because of lack of medical care!
EY2: Thank you! Your words are so reassuring! First time mom here, and dont have much support at present. Appreciate you and BCG1 taking time to share experience.
