Chicago is super underrated. Incredible dining scene, all the arts, every sport, and on and on — while financially being somewhat of a steal in comparison to NYC, LA, SF, Seattle, etc. I love it so much.

Chicago truly rules. i’m a lifelong new yorker and even i’d be very happy to live there.

Crime isn’t any worse here than other big cities 🤷🏻♀️ it’s just televised a lot I think

You know, I hadn’t thought about it but I actually agree with you, AA1.

South side!
Lived in NYC my whole life, been living in Chicago for 4 years now post-college and I don’t regret it. The winters are long and cold (yes even worse than the Northeast), but the summers are worth it. Reasonable rent, a range of neighborhood options, cleaner streets, good transit system, and an amazing restaurant scene.

As far as more apartment for your money and the same kind of commuting/neighborhoods you'd find Chicago over Florida for sure. Houston is like Dallas, decent neighborhood pockets but seriously get ready to drive EVERYWHERE, I think Austin is much the same unless you can afford to live and work in close proximity. Chicago is dope. Go to Chicago

Come to Dallas 😎. Looking for a roommate for a 2b2b in downtown/uptown Dallas rn 😎
I’d do some research…people are leaving Chicago in droves. I personally can’t wait to get out of here. Between the weather, high rate of homicides (not sure if it’s still higher than LA, as the top city now), carjackings, destruction of michigan avenue with break-ins, lori lightfoot and pritzker, and CPS shenanigans…I wouldn’t make it my top choice. But, perhaps that’s just me. 🤷🏻♀️

Denver is also super nice. If u like outdoors

I LOVE Chicago - it’s a friendlier and cleaner version of NYC. However, it actually has colder winters than us, and for that reason, I’d never move there
Love Chicago as a city. Hate the cold. But the summers make up for it 🤷🏼♀️
I wouldn’t worry too much about the crime. If you don’t mind the cold, go for it. But note that the winters are super brutal.

How about you consider places outside of the city like Westchester …??
Enthusiast
If you want to be close to the city without being in the city, Westchester is not the right place for you. Oak Park is a better (but more expensive) suburb if you’re looking for that

Austin for sure if u pick Texas. Otherwise Chicago if u still want the New York feel
Seconding Austin - grew up in San Antonio, went to UT Austin & just moved to NYC after 2 years post-grad there.
The walkability of downtown areas, green space, # of things to do, lots of young people, vibrant nightlight with tons of bars, live music culture (ACL & SXSW), massive amount of opportunity in tech and amazing food/drinks means it’s my favorite place in the state. Essentially every major tech company has a hub in Austin or is HQed in Austin, so opportunities abound. Also, COL for going out is much less than NYC ($5-$13ish for a drink usually) and food is less expensive.
If not Austin, I’d pick Dallas over Houston (I’m going to pass on the humidity, flooding and hurricanes) and has essentially the same jobs you’d find in Dallas - unless you’re in aerospace and energy or oil & gas finance. Dallas & Houston have stupid amounts of traffic & San Antonio is slightly better - it’s cheap and has great cyber & military presence but has a non existent bar scene.
However, you will need a car to get around unless you’re living in the middle of downtown, West or East 6th or the Domain. Public transportation there vs NYC is a whole different ball game (so account for gas, car payments & insurance making the move). Would highly not recommend living close to the campus area unless you want to be surrounded by 50k+ students all the time.

I live in Houston currently and I’m ready to leave in the next year or two. Food scene is great and people are interesting but the weather is not for me haha…also there aren’t a lot of outdoor activities and I’m a person who likes that kind of thing.

I’ve never lived in Chicago but the time I’ve spent there I’ve really enjoyed it. It seems pretty underrated esp compared to New York

I'm in Austin, it's a great city.
Have you visited the places you're thinking of moving to?

Nice! Enjoy, definitely make it a point to visit Chicago as well.
I really like Chicago, I'd move there if it didn't work out here. Great food, welcoming Midwestern vibes.
I visited in October one year. I noticed it was a lot colder than NYC (lake effect weather) - something to consider if you're not into harsh winters
Crime is fine in north side or west loop which is where you’re likely to want to move. Bad on south side

I’ve been in Greater Houston all my life and while I enjoy it for the food scene and diversity, there isn’t much else to do. Furthermore, we have so many transplants here that are making it unauthentic compared to my years growing up in this area. It’s beginning to turn more into a party city. I recommend Austin or even Dallas since you lean more conservative.
Chicago is awesome…
But it has insane level of crime.
Texas is really good to. Go there and fight the good fight to make sure they don’t outlaw all civil liberties!!

The crime in Chicago is largely avoidable if you have common sense and stay vigilant.
