It sounds like you know already that you would like more than one child. Choosing to proceed with pregnancy now, with 1 banked embryo is a fine decision to make if your rationale is 1) tired of treatments or 2) you know you cannot afford another round. Personal experience: I feel like I went into IVF metaphorically “kicking and screaming” first time round. I kept listening to those urban legends of people who had spontaneously got pregnant after their first RE appointment, or via IUI, or naturally after retrieval, and thought that would surely happen for me - that I wouldn’t actually need IVF. My doc made the very same recommendation as yours knowing my goal for multiple kids eventually - to shore up more embryos before potentially successfully getting pregnant with this first frozen embryo. I ignored it because I was just so fed up with childlessness and impatient to meet our baby. Transfer was successful, baby was born. Unsurprisingly I still had the exact same fertility issues postpartum. Which meant my body was now two years older and I was back starting stim and retrieval. Do I wish I’d done another round before getting pregnant first time round? Absolutely. Younger eggs are typically better embryos. The good news is that second IVF round was a mentally a cake walk as I was now in a good place of embracing that I needed the value of this amazing science to advance my family goals. I was able let go of the painful expectation that my fertility issues would be magically cured. Good luck with your journey. Follow your gut.

Agree with this. I’ve done 4 retrievals and the easiest mentally was the back to back cycle. It was harder getting back into stims and all that after a break. I hated feeling like I was back at square one after the transfers failed. But when I was immediately going into another round, I was in a better place mentally and also was a pro at all the shots.

One of the fellow physicians (from the leading hospital / REI facility in my state) noted before my first IVF egg retrieval surgery that they generally recommend 2 embryos per desired child, if possible - which of course is not always the case despite all efforts. IVF results tend to improve with each cycle depending on adjustments to your treatment protocol. Discuss any concerns and your ultimate family goals with your provider. The literature is also fairly clear on egg quality and overall success rates after age 40 so I would be mindful of any relevant bracketed statistics as well during this deliberation process. After initially relying on the anecdotal experience of others as well I’ve since learned that this journey is unique to our own circumstances, biology, timing, and quite frankly luck. Work with who is directly working with you to decide what makes the most sense now for the near future.

I got two embryos after the first cycle and when we told the doctor we need two kids she recommended doing another round. I started doing stuff to improve my egg quality and be prepared for another round of retrieval before placement. I had to pay everything out of pocket as well but we could afford it so we wanted to get it done. I conceived naturally after that though so now I have two embryos for my second child if needed.

At 39, I would definitely bank embryos if you know you want a second. You’ll likely be 40-41 by the time you start trying for a second and even without fertility issues, odds of getting pregnant at that age is low.

like

Also, I don’t wanna be a Debbie downer, but one embryo has at best 70% success rate if it’s a PGT normal AA grade. So there’s still a chance the one won’t be enough for even your first kid. I would get the embryos as early as you can before egg quality declines even more. Sorry, I know I sound super negative and IVF is all about being positive and having hope, but just trying to be realistic and look at stats. I’ve been told so many times “it just takes one!” but I’ve done 6 transfers and none made it so far.

like

I also banked the embryos for the reason that as time passes, my fertility will decrease even if it is 3-4 month gap to try a transfer and then go for stimulation again. It gives a lot of piece of mind to have banked embryos if natural pregnancy post IVF doesnt work. If it does, embroys can always be donated.

What is your age?

39

I am only 32 and we only want 1 child, so after our first round got us only 1 embryo, we decided to transfer. I miscarried in the second trimester and am kicking myself for not having more patience to take a shot at another round (the idea of going back to square 1 with IVF all over again after many months pregnant, and then the loss is devastating). What happened to me is very low odds so unlikely you’d find yourself there, but I wish I’d thought more about how these things can happen.
