I think it says they aren’t cancel culture reactionaries as they aren’t in a relationship with LIA. If you want to really pull the threads at issues, what does it say about sponsors of the NFL who allow domestic abusers in the league, or sponsors of the NBA who are silent about the NBA kowtowing to a China despite their human rights violations. Or WWE sponsors who are silent while they make millions in partnership with a government who fiscally sponsored the 9/11 terrorists and deny most women basic human rights? Stop navel gazing. Ted was fired and is paying for his sins everyday. This was a stupid distraction. Focus on the big picture of shit our industry can change.
I’m not really one of those “woke” types, and agencies continuing to sponsor LIA don’t bother me. So I admit this is a bit of a side rant.
This was much more than just some guy speaking at an event. You had a last minute presentation by someone talking about his own shit in an event that is supposedly geared towards inspiring young creatives. What the hell would a young creative learn from Ted’s presentation?
To make matters way worse, it was not clear people were allowed to skip it. In fact most believed doing so would cause their hotel rooms and travel stipends to be cancelled.
You’re right, it was a stupid distraction and if Ted knew any better he would have opted for a YouTube video instead of working with his friends to more or less make a PR stunt out of it, complete with the bullshitty trade mag write up about it. This was not the time or the place.
