So.... how bad would it be to bail on an internship halfway through? Asking for a friend.

if you’re bailing for a better FT offer, it’s not that bad. but if you’re interning at a solid shop and you’re about to take some rando inhouse gig just because it pays more, don’t.

like

@OP.... okay, snarkiness isn’t really necessary, especially as an intern it almost always makes you look immature. As you will look if you bail halfway through, at minimum. At worst you will have pissed off people who depend on your bandwidth and have the reasonable expectation of you seeing through a 3-month commitment

likesmart

If the other offer starts in a “few days” it seems you have accepted it and are now fucking over one place at least. The mature thing would have been to tell the other place about your commitment when interviewing and tried to find a compromise. Then tell the internship place with lots and lots of warning that you got an offer full time and let them respond. What you’ve done here is basic jv behavior as you plan to bail in “days.” Badly done.

Bailing on an internship is immature. And in this industry, it’s a small world and word travels fast. If the offer is another internship, then you should have really planned the summer better in my opinion. If it’s a FT job, did you tell them that you’re interning during the summer? This seems weird. Also, welcome to internships: they don’t know what hiring will stem from it (especially halfway through). At least you’re not being told that you’ll get hired and then get ghosted once the internship ended, which is something that happened to me.

like

OP, you sound like an 18 yr old who doesn’t know what yr talking about. Get out if that’s what you want but don’t pin your awful attitude on others when you asked for advice. Sounds like you wanted us to justify your move and then couldn’t handle the pushback. Not a great trait in a copywriter or employee in general. Figure out what you want without screwing other people over.

like

Pretty bad, my guy/gal. Shows you can’t handle even a little rough weather. Mind me asking why you want to bail?

like

Why are you trying to leave? I mean... you’ll likely never get hired there again or anywhere where the recruiters / creative directors have friends.

like

It’s more an open question - the internship is cool, but they’re being vague about whether they’ll be hiring any interns full time. So there’s that, plus I got another offer that pays 4x as much but starts in a couple days.

like

It’s pretty common for agencies to not know for sure if they can hire their interns halfway through- often scope isn’t finalized or clear or they still can’t tell if you’re worth it. Either way, it makes you look bad to leave. The industry is really small. Do you mind if I ask what city you’re in?

like

Bad. Very bad

like

I mean... everyone in this industry seems miserable - it seems like all of you are afraid of taking risks. It’s a bit sad, so I’m out

like

Don’t do it. Industry is really small and it’s not worth it. My first internship was horrible. Take note of what you don’t like and use that when looking for your next job/ internship. People will ask you in an interview how you felt about previous jobs. Don’t be disrespectful or put the agency down, simply tell them what you learned.

If you’re miserable, there’s a way to do it politely and respectfully. You shouldn’t waste your time nor the agency’s.

How about you don’t worry about that, eh?

Bailing on an internship now seems pretty late (most internships end in beginning of August). Are you a recent graduate? Do some research on LinkedIn and see if any former interns at either agency have gotten hired after completing their internship. I interned at a place summer after graduating and was told that they couldn't afford to hire me and I would have to stay an intern through December and then they "would see" about full-time. A position opened up in a different department and I applied and got it so it all worked out. Start talking to your supervisor about the potential - hoping they will be honest and can help you find a spot somewhere in the agency if it's not on the exact team you are on now.

Go for the better agency. Don’t worry about money at this level. You play the long game. It takes a few years to start cashing in.

No one will care or remember. Do what makes you happy
