So, how many people here do NOT have law school debt? I feel like a majority of us are starting behind the 8-ball especially if we are immigrants/1st generation. The FIRE bowl keeps talking about how being Financially Independent, Retire Early is largely made possible by lack of student loans.

I have plenty of debt but I am FIREing - the key to it is investing while you pay down your debt. At its peak, I had $130k plus in loans, and currently around $50k, but I’ve invested around 100k since then - missing out on the compound interest while waiting to pay off your loans is such a big mistake (in my opinion)

Reading some of those posts is depressing lol. I’m drowning in debt.

Zero debt here. Did law in the UK. Cost a total of $50k which was paid out of savings.

Are you in the US now?

I left law school with about $80k of debt in mid-2000s. Definitely has altered my ability to save. But then again, so did the financial crisis in 2008-2009.

like

Same. That financial crisis pushed me back like nothing else.

Yeah I have multiple law and graduate degrees and $$$ in student debt plus, you know how it is with taking care of family back home. Trying to find inspiration on how others are building their own security and future despite all this.

As a first gen immigrant with no credit history and on an F1 visa, I wasn’t eligible for loans. It sucked at the time and I had to go to financial services to negotiate a payment plan, but the result was that my husband and I threw our savings and everything else we could earn (and didn’t need) at it and paid it off within a year. Now, I’m thankful that we were not eligible for those loans and the false sense of security it would’ve given us.

I had a full scholarship for tuition so only have the cost of living loan which will be paid off when the moratorium ends. For perspective if I listened to them I would have invested in something fresh out of law school in 2019 which would maybe be down given the war. It would have been up last year. I can’t function with that level of instability til I pay it off.

No loans. My ex boyfriend (bless his heart) payed for law school plus housed, fed me and payed for my books! However, I was a first gen lawyer so I still have family obligations

need to know where u found a boyfriend that did that! that’s so supportive. and also the tea as to why he’s an ex now lol

Probably an ignorant question, but are there any alternatives to a traditional mortgage for a $1M+ loan? I have heard jumbo loans can have lower rates depending on the person and bank. But is there anything that is closer to a bond rate loan if you have a 800+ credit score and say 30% down?

Hi, I'm an employee at a hotel chain who works remotely. I've been working remotely for over a year now and I love it! The company I work for is very supportive of remote workers, which is great.

But there's one thing that's been bothering me: it's hard to get feedback on my work when I'm not in the office. It would be great if there was some kind of system that let me know how my performance was being evaluated while I'm working on projects from home.

I love my job and the people I work with, but there’s one thing that really bothers me: the lack of diversity. Sometimes when I walk into the office and see everyone else around me as the only POC, it feels kind of weird. I don’t think anyone here has ever said anything racist or sexist to me personally, but I don’t feel comfortable talking about these issues with anyone because they might take it personally and then things could get awkward between us.

Hi all. Today is one of those days where I am just really tired of proving myself. I'm a woman POC and the only brown person at my small firm. Owners are subtly racist and the men often treat me like their assistant. I also make a lot less than the male junior even though I have more YOE than him.
