File the extension and you can supersede the return without amending before the extended deadline
Isn’t there someone else who releases the return? Wouldn’t that person require the client signature before the return gets released? I doesn’t sound like it was actually filed/released, but rather exported? If that’s the case, you’re fine!
That’s what I thought when I was at a midsized firm too, not the case. I’m guessing Moss uses Axcess/Prosystems. Gosystems/onesource is wild
Probably a lot. Mistakes happen. We’re not saving lives over here. Own up and apologize and you’ll be fine.
How are staff allowed to file anything? At our firm only a few seniors in an office even have efile permissions.
Depends on your office. Only acting seniors and up would efile. Even then, there would be a senior or a manager supervising if you havent efiled before
Why are you filing the return anyway? wouldn’t the admin do that and need signature forms to do so?
Agree with this, why isn't there a separation of roles to avoid this mistake? KPMG has select designated people who can efile, staff aren't even able.
Pro tip for next time... ALWAYS mark the actual return as paper file. The extension can then be marked as efile and subsequently qualified and transmitted without any confusion
Ppl are dying in Africa - more important things in life to worry about
People are dying everywhere not just Africa. Why did you have to single out Africa?
Haha that is so bad.
There are some things that need to be filed with an original return. If those aren’t filed then it could be a big deal or at least a years worth of mess to clear with the IRS. Take 15 mins to make sure you actually did what you think you did before you run it by the chain. I’m not even sure you’re allowed to efile without getting rejected if the return isn’t filled out.
Agree with above. Just explain it was an accident. Nobody died. Client will have to file an amended return. No big.
File the extension and maybe the return gets rejected
Doesn't an extension have to be filed before a return for the superceded return to be effective?
PwC3 has the right idea... or hope the “return” gets rejected.
Damn
How did the conversation go with the client and the manager?
Gosystems
Probably too late but if you call OIT/Gosystem sometimes they can pull the efile before it's accepted.
Had a partner do this once. It’ll be ok hopefully it’s not a huge return, it’ll have to be paper filed. You could also try superseding it
Agree with PWC3. Just file the extension then. Supersede the return you just efiled.
Happens to us at least once a season. What type of return was it? On a 1065 you can refile a superseded return that will just override the original return as long as you file it before the extended due date ( if you filed a extension). On a 1040 it’s a bit more complicated if refunds were getting refunded.
For the sake of full disclosure, this year I efiled my personal return when intending to efile the extensions with refunds due, will probably file a 1040x
