Sorry OP, your situation is definitely harder than mine. Never knew beef allergies were a thing!
A1- me too. Think Thin bars, Kind bars, and almonds. I'm in Africa and my trip was extended by a week and I am running low on supplies. Oh yeah, I also packed GF instant oatmeal packs and have been making them with the hot water in my room. EY1- allergies. There are certain foods that will make me too sick to work for multiple days if I ingest them and even if I have a tiny amount. It happened last week with a sauce that was made with a beef broth. I have a diagnosed beef allergy. I did not even know that it was a thing until it was diagnosed, but I stopped getting super sick "for no reason and with zero warning" once I stopped. I have several others where I'll have to straight up take a Benadryl and pass out for hours if my food is even prepared in the same part of the kitchen (shellfish). I've been existing off of the salmon, chicken curry, and the god damned mother f-ing "capresse salad." Thankful for it, but might be reaching my limit. Thanks, guys, feel good to have some support. Time to order the chicken curry...
Thanks! Me either. I get so sick! I get even sicker from shellfish. The gluten, of course, is not an "allergy," but I still can't have it (doctors orders). It once took me a solid month to recover from eating a breaded pork chop. I also can't have dairy (same issue as gluten) and a wide range of fermentable carbohydrates (watermelon, etc). Oh yeah, I also have to be careful with acidic foods (pineapple). So yes, the god damned m-f capresse salad. You wouldn't believe what is passing for mozzarella, but I'm just thankful that I have something.
EY1- yes, and in my instance, they all interact with each other so I have to stagger them into different meals (while avoiding ingesting some with certain foods). As if my life was not complicated enough. Honestly, at this point, I'm just thankful that I know how to manage. Before I figured out all of these issues, I was often too sick to make it through the day.
Tbh marijuana was the only thing that helped me deal with all the anxiety of food plus all the side effects like nausea, stomach aches, tiredness, etc. somehow gave me more energy
Wow! Good luck my fellow 🐠s! Def. makes me thankful that I can pretty much eat whatever I want.
I know, so awkward. I don't want people to think that I am uptight and not fun, but I legit can't change my body. So, once I tried this Japanese beauty product that had some type of shellfish in it and I got a reaction! It was so bad that I had to take a day off from work. That was so embarrassing. Totally played it off like the fish additive was a sauce and not some footpad that I bought at T.J. Maxx. (I know, I KNOW...)
Or when someone thinks they're being nice and gives you brownies or something on your birthday...I'm always like ooooooooh soooooo..... hahaha
The worst!!! It's like you might as well play party pooper in the background
Know the feeling. Spent three months abroad and had the same three foods over and over again. Allergic to gluten, soy, any red meat including pork, mushrooms, most nuts, many vegetables, and partially lactose intolerant. When I'm in developed countries I basically survive at restaurants by salads but couldn't do that while abroad because of being very sensitive about contaminated water.
I feel ya. I have been gluten free for 6 years and it makes travel very difficult. I often go grocery shopping at a local store to have some snacks on hand that I know I can eat.
OP I feel you! I'm allergic to so many things and can't even imagine what your level would be like....especially in Africa. You can do this!! When do you get to go home?
Thanks, A2! I'll arrive home next Saturday. Oh yeah, and then there is the Russian Roulette of plane food! You can only request one restriction (totally fair). Every time I open my GF meal and see that it is chicken and not beef, I feel like I have won the lottery.
A2- thanks for the tip! Great point on the anxiety.
It's not up to healthy levels but it's up enough. And I can deal with that I guess because the stress of it all is too much. I'm a girl and it's especially hard when I'm on my period. My body still craves meat and chocolate but if I eat them I get sick and migraines, respectively 😩
Thanks so much! Yes, appreciate what you have. I keep all of this a secret from co-workers, but sometimes I wish people knew how much I had to manage just to be able to be well enough to work.
Op if it makes you feel any better, in addition to being GF, I also have a shellfish allergy like you. I've never eaten it to know my reaction, but it came up very strongly on my allergy test.
A3- same! Buffalo meat burgers have been my saving grace! If you are in the DC area, the Silver Diner does buffalo burgers on GF buns. Lifesaver. Re: migraines- I did everything for them and you know what was the ultimate game changer? Physical therapy for my neck- how I was holding my body at the computer was triggering them. Hellz on earth. Good luck! Also, your body can only absorb the iron with vitamin c. I've been taking vitron c from CVS.
Dietary restrictions due to allergies? Religion? Or just a PITA when it comes to food?
Oh man!! Sorry Op.
