So you go into a new firm doing brand new work? Are you ready to work hard to become an individual expert or you’re trying to pivot to provision? Once you’re hired as individual from an competitor, it’s often hard to pivot away from where you’re hired for - i.e you won’t be doing provision. On the other hand, the WLB don’t exist in public accounting because it’s a client service job, so superviosr are basically on call 24/7. If you step into RSM, I mean, it can be seen as a career cold point that you’re no longer prestige, but is there a good story you’ll be able to tell? Saying RSM offer me provision work is not a strong statement

Wlb for us is highly dependent on office. We have some that barely meet annual charge goals. Some are well over. But in general I would say expect to be basically the same as B4, +/- 5%

This is both for a heavy senior/supervisor role

It sounds like your concern with EY is the service line you’re going into. Why not apply for a different group at EY that focuses on corporate work/provisions? If your concern is that the recruiter will somehow take it personally, I wouldn’t be. These kinds of things happen all the time.

Op where do you see your self in 5 or 10 years? Do you want to be a partner? Or stay in PA forever? I was in expat tax( kind of personal tax), and moved to corporate tax because I don’t see myself in PA forever and there are not much high paying jobs in industry for folks with personal tax experience. If you want to try other things or wanna move to industry at some sometime then corporate tax and provision would be your best option. Also, I would go for RSM and spend an year or two there. Then if you don’t like it there or wanna come back to a more prestigious firm you can pivot back to big4. Good luck 👍

I actually do see myself in PA forever. Maybe not BIG 4 forever, but i do see myself in PA. Good advice on trying RSM, i could easily go back to BIG 4 later if I wanted too. They hire from the mid tiers all the time.

You will not have a wlb at RSM. Don’t let them fool you. We work longer hours on average than most big 4 in my region

You can reach out to people on LinkedIn and ask about the WLB but I would guess it’s the same

Are you sure RSM will let you do totally different work? They paid a premium for your experience. It's a lots cheaper to train a home grown to do new work. If they let you hop to provision, it has very good exit opportunity. Individual tax experiences wont be able to get you an industry position.

Sorry to revive an old thread but when RSM says they want you to have a little experience in everything before you specialize, they mean it. I came over from B4 in January and have been substantively involved in partnerships, s corps, c corps, and provisions since then.

I’ve worked for both. EY is great but RSM probably has better WLB.

Where u currently are now ..?

If you want to do provisions, take the RSM or apply for the provision group at EY (or another B4 firm). Your experience getting a few provisions here or there in a PCS group is not going to be the same quality as working in a group that does provisions and corporate work all year long. I switched into a provision group as a senior associate and love it! Im optimistic i might never do a tax return again in my career (except my own!)

Don’t get hung up on “name” I started at a firm of 40 people and now in B4 doing fine. Once you have experience, all that matters is what you’ve done /have skills in. ASC740 skills are usually high demand but the WLB is not always great in those groups just FYI

RSM

RSM

RSM has a MUCH better culture.
