Hi Fishies! (Is that what we are? I’m going with it)
I just came across a Google Research and Insights role that got me SUPER excited and I was about to apply when I had the idea of seeing if anyone would be willing to give me a referral. I understand (and respect) that most of you Googlers on here feel that a referral is only useful if you know the person but I would be happy to jump on the phone to give you some info about me. It would mean so much! 4 YOE at a major audio steaming service
Hi Everyone,
I just received an offer to work as an software sales representative (SDR) for IBMs Z systems. I'm coming as a sales engineer in the cloud security space. Can anyone advise me on whether Z systems are something worth going into? Also what do the growth opportunities look like at IBM? Is there opportunity for lateral movement onto other teams? Not too sure how I feel about working on mainframes (Z systems) but they keep pitching hybrid cloud to me. IBM

Can you just wait and see how others address them? Does Apple have an internal directory where people can make their pronouns public? Or email signature
Seconding. If you’re uncomfortable asking, keep referring to them as “they/them” and then eventually you’ll hear it from someone.
Are you saying that you are unsure of which pronouns your new manager prefers and don’t want to ask that person only because you don’t want to call out that you are unsure about it? Just making sure I understand your question.
So Apple does not have the pronouns field enabled on Slack. Interesting.

I can’t speak for the lgbt community, but as someone who is within the community my experience is that, more often than not, someone who presents heavily a certain way (heavy femme or heavy butch) those tend to be the pronouns they want used, unless they specify. If someone is presenting neither gender or expresses elements of both, it’s generally not seen as offensive to ask what their preferred pronouns are.
It only becomes offensive if there’s consistent misuse of pronouns or you have to ask multiple times.
To really avoid it altogether you can just say your boss’s name or ‘they’ when referring to them until you know the pronouns.
Is there a company directory with this info? Here at Google our company directory allows us to edit pronouns, record the pronunciation of our name, edit picture, etc
I’d also go through their LinkedIn and see if others have left references for them and see if that could tip you off in the right direction. I think it’s OK to ask directly too :)
I would just avoid it until you know, but that's my way of approaching things. It's such a small thing at the end of the day, and eventually someone will say the pronouns in conversation or an email, so you shouldn't be waiting for too long.
I would just say "Hey there!" or something like that lol
In general, a useful way to suss out pronouns is to introduce yourself with your own. Don’t know if it’s too late for that in your situation
There's nothing wrong with asking because how else are you supposed to know. I would just start off by saying "real quick, just so I know, what are your pro nouns".
Sounds like an episode of curb waiting to happen
I don't think there's anything wrong with asking. Shows you are considerate.
