So I had a coding interview recently and have decided that the format was actually pretty unfair for people with ADHD. Essentially you have to code the answer on a screen shared with the interviewer whilst explaining it and listening to the interviewer - all of this is anxiety provoking and distracting meaning I underperformed on quite a simple coding task. It felt a bit like asking a person who has dyslexia to compete in a spelling bee rather than a written test.

Even without ADHD, live time-pressured coding exercises are easier or harder for some people than for others, and it's basically uncorrelated with actually doing well at the job we're interviewing for.

I used to work at a company that had an interview process that relied heavily on this, and the result was that folks who did competitive programming always did extremely well on our interviews, but all that practice and experience is totally useless for anything except the interview. Meanwhile we had senior candidates with extremely good experience profiles failing phone screens because we were asking them to do datastructure manipulation under time pressure. Guess which one does a better job working in an environment where your deadlines are measured in days rather than minutes, and your datastructures are all in the standard library!

I left that company, and my current employer relies more heavily on take-home exercises. Some people complain about the fact that it takes longer than a 1h phone interview, but it filters out the people who grind leetcode but can't actually work on real software, and avoids penalizing folks who don't do well under the pressure of a live interview.

This reply resonated with me so strongly. I would rather have a programmer who knew the trade offs (human, operational, computational etc) of their solution and thought about it deeply than just jammed out unreadable but "clever" code quickly.

I’d have to experience it to understand fully but that does sound quite jarring. Hopefully you still did well!

I did not. I'm fairly sure this is why I didn't get the job. I apparently did really well at the other 4 types of interviews - a learning one, a collaborative one, a "decomposition" one and a generic problem solving one. I know this because I had to resit the coding interview because they wanted to give me a second chance. I still fluffed it due to imposter syndrome and being overly anxious and unable to concentrate.

I know where you're coming from. It's tough and you have no choice to deal with it. Reason why even during meetings I have to ask permission to take a screenshot or a picture of whatever is flashing on the screen so that if I get distracted I can always go back and check it again. It saves whoever does the reporting some time.

Well, fairness is something that depends on the position. I can imagine if the position requires a lot of collaborative team work or call center like situations that the interview style is important as it directly relates to the working conditions.

Additionally, even without ADHD, the situation seems intentionally anxiety producing and that, too, might be intentional.

I just figure it’s good for employers to show their true colors during interviews; if the interview stinks than working there would be awful.

Programming under pressure as part of my job is actually something I've only ever done once or twice. A hairy hot-fix or live database migration are not situations you want your developers to be well-practiced in. It usually means they made a bug and they're having to fix the mess live.

They're probably just wanting to see how you perform under pressure. With ADHD, we all have limitations and that stylistically doesn't sound super fair in the moment. But they're probably not going to compromise and change the formatting of their interview process.

Yeah it's not the best or most effective way to test but it's hard to go against that system. In the past, I've been able to flag early on in the application process to ask for some accommodation.

Your experience basically encapsulates what we, people with adhd, have to deal with. If you don't mind me asking, were you able to disclose your diagnosis to them? Not that I'm saying that you should.

I understand you, really. My superior said she wanted to know how I perform under pressure. I was devastated at that time, but she assured me I still did well. Were they informed about your situation?

That sounds very difficult. I have never taken a coding test but I do have ADHD and there is no way I would do well on that. Have you thought about reaching out to the hiring manager and explaining that you have ADHD? I don't think it could hurt.

I don't code at all but I can understand how that would be unfair. I feel that many standardizd tests and interviews like that are not condusive to folks like us who have ADHD They can really be a struggle.

I’m curious, I Just had a Canadian company reach out for a remote recruiter role. Upon asking them for their benefits package specially since they have no physical presence in the US, I was told they don’t share that unless they are closer to making an offer.

Is this normal ? Most US companies share their benefits package with pride usually upon your first meeting. What’s your take on this? Would you invest time interviewing and not knowing what kind of benefits you will get ?
