so I have trouble presenting myself well. I usually look haggard and I seem to wear out shoes and clothes at an alarming rate. Looking for a few good guiding principles to improve on this. M fish

Outsource. Dry cleaning 1x per month. Shoe shine 2x per month. Haircut every 3 weeks. Clothes will last longer. Shoes will last longer. No additional effort from you.

Get a good barber and tailor. Also wrinkle resistant clothing

Find a female friend or a guy with style to fix you up. Dont push back on any of their suggestions. And then ride that out for a while until you feel comfortable making your own choices

Only a rich man can afford to buy cheap things. Choose quality goods

My thoughts:
Dry clean 1x per month is stupid, suits only dry clean 3-4x per year. You can have them pressed whenever you want.

Shirts- send to cleaners after each use (they will launder and press them, not dry clean though. Should be around 2$ per shirt.

Buying new clothes: fit is king. You can make almost anything look good with a killer fit. Suggest you go out and have 2 shirts custom made no matter what. If you’re in a big city, you can try Blank Label or there are tons of other options, custom shirts start around 100 a pop (Twillory, ProperCloth etc). Get one dress shirt and one casual going-out shirt made.
This will be your baseline for fit. From now on, shoot for things that fit similar to these two pieces.
From here, you can continue with all custom stuff, or look for brands off the rack that fit you similarly. Honestly, having 3-4 really nice going out shirts will be a huge lift to your wardrobe and is all you need (depending on how much you get out). Sone of my favorite brands in order of $ to $$$
Casual: Jcrew, Untuckit, Rag&Bone
Dress: Charles Tyrwhit, Suitsupply, Custom

Shoes: you need a few good pair, some good advice above. Real quality dress shoes start at around $300. High end cole Haans can work in a pinch in the mid 200’s. Cole Haan, To Boot Bew York,, Allen Edmonds, Magnanni
For casual shoes, a great pair of boots is versatile and looks good almost anywhere and in al ost any weather.

Hair: get it cut 1-2x per month
Socks: fun socks are an easy win. HappySocks

Most important for all of these things: buy very few things, but buy things that you love and that are versatile and high quality and take care of them. My best dressed guy friend owns like 5 pairs of pants and 6-7 long sleeve shirts (apart from work clothes) and some t’s.

Care tips: shoes: polish frequently, 1x per week at airport is easiest, buy your own kit for zen moments on weekends.
Jeans: you should own 1-2 pair of awesome jeans (AG are my favorite). Don’t machine wash, only dry clean 3-4x p/yr. can use freezer if start to smell.

Summary and Action Plan:
Donate everything that doesn’t meet the above. Get down to quality, core pieces that fit you well. Take care of your body (gym) and hygiene.
Guys whole look put together typically spend effort to achieve.

Male fish in my 30’s here

Clothes: Find good fits for your size, try to not wear clothing items that fit too large or too tight. Pants should be right length. Don’t wear wrinkled clothes right out of the dryer. Iron it yourself or dry clean, but wrinkled clothes will make you look grody af.

Don’t have to spend a ton to look good and Banana Republic is a great place to get decent stuff for not a lot when they have 40-60% sales.

Nordstrom is a great place to get style tips and recommendations for free. You don’t have to buy everything they recommend, but gives you some fresh ideas as to what looks good/modern. Take their ideas and wait for sales or shop at Nordstrom Rack for similar items.

Shoes: Not sure how often and why you wear them out so quickly, but buying high quality shoes should help with that. Allen Edmonds is a recommended dress shoe, but price point is not for everyone. Just don’t buy the cheapest, no name brand shoes and they should look good and last. Also, recognizable name brands does not equate to looking good

Grooming: Find a good hair stylist/barber and go on a regular schedule. Trim facial hair accordingly if you have it. For reference, I have shorter hair and go to my stylist every 2 weeks. She charges me less for trims vs full haircut, which is every other visit.

Hygiene: Wash yourself and brush your teeth.

PM is open if you want more!

Please DM me if you are in the DC area and I would be more than willing to introduce you to my style consultant who helps me with my clothing. Gotta find what fits you and then follow the suggestions on the thread to care for what you get. General rule, quality of fabric and build quality is always more important than price. A $1200 custom suit that lasts you ten years is better than a $200 suit that last 1.5 years. Same for shoes. Better to have a $350 pair of comfortable good looking shoes with taps than to buy DSW specials every year.

It's not price or even quality. Get to know the clothing that fits you well. Better to get a cheaper suit and spend more on tailoring than pricey brands. Same for shoes. Get something classic and well fitting, but take care of the leather. Keep it polished.

Great wisdom in BA1’s words. If you spend more on quality, your stuff will last longer and you will look better. Thing is, there is education required. Don’t just go by brands. Understand what goes into quality (Goodyear welts, floating canvases, hand work, fabric houses, etc.). Understand why you are paying more and it will make it more palatable, and avoids you overpaying for “labels” versus real quality.

Yup that’s where I’ve balked. I don’t know what’s what and I can just grab banana republic pants off the rack

Clothing fit is significant. It try to buy suits on clearance and then have them tailored. After Christmas is often a good time for suits.

Shirts and slacks can also be tailored if your body shape doesn’t work with off the rack

25/M I get a lot of compliments on my style. I agree out outsourcing some of your things. Everything should get dry cleaned once a month. All shoes should be shined every other week if you wear them regularly. But some shoe trees. I get a haircut/shave/mani and pedi every month

Shoot me a DM if you want to talk

Dry cleaning once a month is a bad play.

Why do you say that? More steam or less dry cleaning

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received re: looking good/clothing was to hit the gym and lift. You’ll look way better in a well fitted $200 suit than the overweight guy in the $2000 custom suit.

Can’t co-sign for the last bit, but agree that working out makes all the difference.
Nobody looks good in a $200 suit.

Associate 1 dropping the science!
Dry cleaning kills your suits and kills bad suits dead, quick. Even four times a year is more than you should. Unless you’re a farmer.
