So I left public and have been in my industry role for about a month now. I was in public for 4.5 years. I wanna leave this industry role because I'm seeing some culture red flags that are extremely hard to look past. Am I stupid for shopping around for another job or should I stick it out for a year like I planned? I can provide more detail in the comments to things I'm red flagging but wanted to get initial thoughts?

Left public as an S3 because the burnout and mental health decline was real. Used a recruiter recommended by a close friend and they found me this role that seemed great, pay bump and title bump to manager. Seemed great, and a former SM from my firm was the controller. He said that it's a great role, if you get done before 5 everyday, he doesn't care if I leave early or w/e as long as my work gets done.

I start and they have nothing for me, makes sense since I'm learning and don't know anything about the work there. I did all my trainings for the next 6 months and finished all the work they've been giving me quickly because excel skills learned in public are just too good. Takes me an average 15-30 minutes to complete each task that takes another person 2 hours. I've read everything that I need to read that they've given to me, even resorting to googling things to learn more because I don't know where else to ask since every time I ask for more work or things to look at or play around with, nada and everyone is too busy and it seems like they don't want to share the wealth.

Now, this makes me literally have NOTHING to do. I've resorted to studying for the CPA exam since I'm working through that in my downtime. The asistant controller and I have touchpoints since I report directly to him. He brings up that they have a software called ActivTrak. Eseentially, tracks your time and what you're doing. Apparently it flags me as unproductive. Haha WHAT. Looked it up and I'm not a fan. I have nothing to hide but also, no. Did not go through public to have one of these types of apps be a part of my working contract. They keep saying they want to attract Big4, well, this is NOT how you go about it. And they don't outline that at all in the handbook or employment contract so I kinda feel violated.

Top that with it being a small company that hires from a local college that doesn't yield the best talent, nothing about their culture is available since they're so small and not public, and you can't contribute to your 401k until the beginning of the quarter after your one year anniversary, maternity leave is nonexistent, not many senior leadership is female, so why even have anything maternity leave wise, and the industry isn't really what I want my brand to stand by. And now this stupid tracker? And I'm being told that I'm unproductive??? Like I keep asking for stuff, all of that is documented, so why are they doing this to me??? I never thought I'd work for a company that paid for this service, as this seems like a slimy thing to do and I feel disgusted. And maybe because the general staff here isn't 'Big4 material' as the president told me during my interview, but still. You wanna attract Big4 talent in order to go public, then you don't implement this.

All of this I've realized after starting. I feel so stupid because now I feel like I made the worse decision of my life and I just wanna go jump off a bridge because I'm such a stupid failure for getting myself into this mess.

Also, plesse feel free to let me know if I'm expecting too much. Humble me if you need to. But, this situation just doesn't seem like a long term thing for me, and I'd love to stay at a job for a long time but this isn't it.

The partner from my firm actually reached out to me about a contact she has at a large investment firm and ask if I was interested. I couldn't have said yes faster. Fingers crossed but I kinda just have lost all hope on being able to make the right decisions for myself.

Thanks for reading!

Yeah I kinda felt like maybe I could do well and find myself but seriously I feel like I made the wrong decision. Like all I am scared of is my next employer looking at the fact that I just started this new position and now I'm looking again. I feel like I was fed a lie and hate the decision I made

Trust your gut. I stayed at a job for too long because I was trying to wait out

Good idea - more or less what I was thinking of the state I've been while at this job. I also don't want to lie but I feel like I didn't gain anything here and also didn't lose the value of my experience crazy either. Thank you!

Definitely get out!

Thank you for the encouragement! Definitely taking my search seriously and doing more research of companies with an exisiting track record I can actually read about.

Definitely leave. When looking at new roles be sure to check glassdoor and indeed to see if there are any red flags in the reviews.

Good luck!! Proud of you for taking a stand and putting the wheels in motion to leave.
