So I made a connection with an alumni from my school doing exactly what I want to do. She reached out to me to get breakfast and lunch and told me straight up she wants me on her team but to be patient. This was over the summer, I am about to graduate and she has texted me to congratulate me on my exam scores but never mentions bringing me on. I asked her twice what the outlook was and she would just ignore that message and talk about the exam scores. Do you think she still wants me on the team?

Doesn't hurt to politely ask again, but look elsewhere as you shouldn't have all your eggs in one basket. She may not be in a position to offer you a role at the moment, but still helpful to keep her in your network for future opportunities.

like

Kinda sounds like it’s not gonna happen. But I’m also not sure anyone is gonna be able to answer this question for you other than her.

like

Don’t wait. I’d reach out again very directly but move on as if nothing were happing and keep momentum going in other directions so this doesn’t hold you up. If it does later, then great, if not, then the only time wasted was a follow up message.

like

Doesn't hurt to ask. The worst they can say is no. Have you tried reaching out since then?

like

Like I reached out, I got congratulated for my first exam, then reached out again and then they congratulated me but never responded to either of my inquiries about starting.

You know there are bonuses paid for recruitment?

Never put your future in someone else's hands. If it's meant to work out it will in the end but you should definitely be looking into other opportunities. Still ask her about it but it may not be something she even has control over.

I agree with the responses. Continue to market yourself and apply for jobs.

Timing is everything in the job market. Even if she wants you on her team, she may or may not be in a position to do so right now. I wouldn’t take it personally - if she indicated it once, she’ll definitely be looking out for you if an opportunity arises.

I had a former colleague reach out once for opps in my company and we just didn’t have anything. Lo and behold, a position he was perfect for became available right after he started somewhere else. Since then, all other roles would be a step down, which he’s not interested in entertaining. Keep your options open and continue to connect and survey the market. Something will fall into place and it may or may not be this connections company this time around.

There are hiring freezes in some companies so not sure if she is avoiding bc of that.

Put yourself in the job market. Don’t rely on anyone who promised to give you a job without any solid commitment. And you may find a better job if you try.

Out of curiosity. How would a company view a potential candidate who has a period of unemployment to study for the CPA. I am considering to start studying for the exam but I know I would need to leave my employer in order to give 110%. I am contemplating the idea of at least passing one part while employed. Then leaving my employer to study FAR. I am considering to leave my current employer anyways, so it’s more of how my future employer would view that lapse.

Hi all,

Do firms match offers from other Big 4s for campus hires? I’ve received a campus offer from both

Would it be a bad move to let them know about the other offer and try negotiating? I feel it wont make a difference in the long run, but at the same time I don’t want to leave any money on the table if possible.

Thanks!
