General advice for CCs - never spend money you wouldn’t normally spend to cash out rewards. This doesn’t mean that you can’t go beyond your normal budget, but don’t spend just to spend. Examples of ways to get it without spending on things you wouldn’t normally:
- Big ticket items for family and close friends (e.g. my roommate was buying a car and I offered to pay the down payment with my Amex and bought my parents new couch on my CSR). Just be careful who you ask and make sure they’d pay.
- gift cards because you can use them later. I’m personally not a fan of this bc you are essentially loosing the return on the 4K you could get on the market or savings (although savings rates are pretty low right now)
- Early Christmas/holiday/birthday shopping. You will have to buy some gifts, might as well buy them early and put them in your closet.
- Flights - lots of airlines are allowing you to book with no change fees. Plan a trip and change it later on if necessary. This one is a bit riskier, but doable.
Ask friends & family if you can buy a high value item for them that they were going to get regardless and have them pay you back.
Gift cards
My normal monthly spend was more than enough to get the 4k no problem 😂
Black friday and holidays are coming up. Would the added shopping, in addition to your normal spend, get you up to the 4k? If not, seconding what others have suggested - one-off high ticket items or travel plans would do the trick!
Plastiq to pay rent
This isn’t bad if you’re willing to pay a 3% fee
Look for expenses you can pre-pay. I called my gym and asked to pre-pay for a few months to get some extra spend for a bonus.
Worst case, send a large PayPal goods payment to a close friend/family member and have them pay you back. You'll eat a 3% fee but the signup bonus more than makes up for that.
If anyone needs an easy way to reach $3k in the next day then let me know. DM me.
Gift cards for things you will definitely need to spend money on in the near future.
Had to do this once with a 500$ Amazon gift card, took like a year (pre-pandemic haha) to use it down, but still worth it.
Not going to be worth doing that with 4K, but assuming you’d get to 2500 or 3k it’s easy to find things for the remaining balance (gas card, grocery card, Uber cash balance used to be a good one when work travel still existed)
Just charge everything to it for the next three months.

In college I’d put all of my friends festival/concert tickets on my card, if you have friends/family who arnt point hoes you may be able to do this as well.
