So I was laid off. Is it okay to talk about it at my next job interview? Feels like everyone knows anyway.

Nothing wrong with being laid off esp if it was a massive one. You can tell them that RGA lost a few major accounts and had to restructure the org due to the loss major clients. Which is all true! It's advertising. It's normal to be laid off.

like

We laid off like 60 people total across the entire network. They'll understand it wasn't a performance issue as long as you give them that info.

like

I was recently laid off by TBWA and I would avoid the topic unless they ask. Don’t update your LinkedIn right away but do reach out to your network privately (e.g., send a private message but not a public post). I would also rephrase it differently: instead of saying “laid off”, I’d call it a “downsizing” or “reorg”. Based on the reaction I had from some recruiters, laid off still implies that you were expendable and not a top performer. The other two terms makes it clear that it was something that you couldn’t control.

like

AD2 I got let go bc I was more expensive but always in demand for projects, same with a lot of people. Don’t make assumptions about people you don’t know. Lots of amazing people, especially this last round.

like

You totally got this! You worked in advertising, so sell the fact that you were laid off. Unfortunately we lost some big clients so the XX department suffered a loss including me. However I'm excited for this opportunity to reevaluate my career goals and this "insert new company here" fufils what I'm looking for!

like

Its good to be able to speak objectively and thoughtfully about it if/when asked.

So sorry to hear that ☹ good luck!! 🤞 sending good vibes your way..

Oh, AD1, you must not work at RGA. I don't suck at my job but I do suck at politics.

like

Only if they ask

like

I wouldn't. Yes, it happens all the time, but so does leaving. If you have a year or so on your resumé, I've found that folks don't wonder why you might be looking for something new.

like

Only if they ask, and then say "let go". It's true that there were lots of people laid off at once, but hiring manager will still wonder why YOU were part of that group, and if there was a reason behind why you were chosen (poor work etc). I mean, RGA didn't let go of their best people, no offence. In my experience, most places don't ask why you left anyway.

Wishing you good luck!

I proactively tell people about my layoffs (yes more than once). I frequently am running through everything with the open-ended "tell me about yourself" questions, which include what I was looking for at the time and then why I left. No one cares. Most people have been there.

like

adding to SPM1 - especially in Advertising! Everyone knows it’s a way of life and let go v fired = client work avail v performance

like

Also, if they don't directly ask if you were laid off but they say what's your story, do you include that nugget?

like

In my experience people always ask why you left....

I got laid off and was open about it, especially when asked why I was looking. I was in a similar situation - relatively expensive - and just explained what happened and offered great references. I was unsure about it but got the advice that it's better to be honest. In this industry it's happened or will happen to most of us. And I got an offer within 3 weeks so honesty didn't hurt me!

like

I've been telling people I was (in July) but I still don't have a job sooo maybe not. Most people have been nice and understanding about it though, especially since it was tied to Verizon budget cuts.

like

Sucks, sorry to hear. I got laid off or fired once. Still don't know the difference...

like

When I got laid off and started telling people in interviews, they would pry in a way that seemed as though they thought I was lying to cover up getting fired or quitting (I was laid off after only 4 months so I think how long you're at the agency matters, too.) I would get oddly intrusive and specific screening questions to validate the fact that yes, we lost an account and the agency couldn't afford our team anymore. I think short stints make it look like you could be lying. If you were there for over a year, you should be fine.

Hi 🐠, need some advice. Was told by my manager that time doing research (for info related to my client) is not client billable and has to be charged to the overhead code. This strikes me as fundamentally wrong, esp bc this is a flat rate project so the hours will just affect my utilization / internal metrics, not how much the client is billed. I asked for a non-billable code that counts towards utilization but was told my utilization is fine even though I’d be billing <40hrs & to use OH code

I think (fingers crossed) that I am about to get a job offer for a management role.
