I would echo some of the previous comments - first and foremost, it’s actually not very common to get a promotion every year at most companies. This is not very sustainable for a company. Especially at a junior level - it can greatly vary, but for example, I have a junior designer on my team and she likely won’t be promoted to our standard level designer position until 2 year mark because that’s the industry standard for having said title and she’s never had this job prior to our company.

It’s not doing the design industry any favors by promoting young designers too quickly (e.g. senior designers with <2 years of experience) as it leads to a lot of mis-hires and people ending up in positions they aren’t prepared for - obviously if you have really impressed her/stood out/shown clear mastery of talent and exceeded expectations then there are always exceptions.

So I would say be patient in regards to a promotion - although a lot of companies will give you a small pay bump every year. I think it’s ok to bring this back up, but be prepared to defend why you think you deserve it in case she volleys the question back to you. It’s also perfectly acceptable to tell your manager your desire is to be X (title) and what are things you can do to really show her you’re exceeding on the path to that role? Even if you don’t get the raise today, it helps show her the path you want to be on and set clear guidelines for how to get there/earn that raise.

On another note - if you don’t like the job, your manager, the work you’re doing - a quicker way to get a “raise” these days is job hopping. Just keep in mind it will reset the clock for a promotion most likely. You will be the “new kid” again.

How much post college experience do you have? Do you have a sense of your comp vs. peers in your industry?

I’d make sure she understands your hopes and expectations before jumping ship. Also, there may be other reasons to stay. Are you still growing? Does she give you opportunities that may not come from another manager? Do you enjoy the industry/will more time at the company look good on a resume?

The main thing is cost of living for me. living in NYC on 40k a year feels like poverty and the thought of doing this for another year makes me sick

So I definitely take issue with 40k a year in nyc, that is not fun. I know next to nothing on your profession but a 20k difference is going to be huge.

Strongly agree with previous response — I’ve come to expect promotions every two years vs every year. I’ve found that you have to be working at the higher level before you can be promoted into it. If you have a good manager, it’s well worth staying.

So, I am 23 and just started my first corporate job. I am excited. I work hard, I pick things up fast and can work under pressure however with this being said I am struggling with imposter syndrome. I feel too young, I feel unexperienced, they hired 4 of us and 3 were internal candidates. I feel like I'm going to slip up, or not manage the work load. my previous job ( triage worker) was rather unserious in terms of management and expectation.

Any tips or advice to overcome and smash the job?
