So I’ve been in college for 5 years now doing a basic IT degree, I’ve been programming on the side (front end web) mostly just HTML, CSS, and just now getting into JavaScript. What else should I work on before applying for a job? Very nervous about the tech interview and basic requirements on job posting. I know that people just throw those requirement together and you shouldn’t go by them but just want to get an idea of what else I need to work on and prepare for

Get all your professional materials in order - personal portfolio site, LinkedIn (fully completed), GitHub/GitLab, resume, etc. - and make sure everything links to other another (think of a mesh). A big part of front end development is how good your works and functions. Mobile responsiveness, accessibility, basic UI/UX concepts, etc.

Additionally, you definitely need to get a rudimentary understanding of one of the big three JS frameworks - React, Angular, or Vue. However, make sure you have a solid understanding of JS before diving into one of those frameworks.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to reach out - terrence.codes.

So, a recruiter sent me a HackerRank assessment and I went to complete it and it was so easy? Is this a red flag or a shit test or something? Like there was a number sequence: “1234567”, and it corresponded to a word: “Surgeon”. Then it was the word: “Snore”, which corresponded to “36425”. and then I had to figure out the number that corresponded to: “Rogue”. It just seemed too easy, why even have it besides creating another barrier to a possible offer? Should I tread carefully here?

Hi everyone! I’m a new professional (<1 year post grad) and I’ve been offered a position that I’m really excited for at a non-profit. The posted salary range was $48-58k and I was offered $53k, which I think is fine, but I’ll be moving to the LA metro area and I’m a little concerned about the cost of living. Im also not sure what kinds of benefits so should be asking for, the letter just says “employer contribution to health insurance if necessary, details TBD”.

All comments are welcome, thx!

So, this is a very personal kind of question, but I hope people relate and can provide an answer. I am CLOSE friends with a peer on my team and they an awful engineer and I'm always showing them up, simply by doing the right work. It's getting to a point where I'm getting bogged down by them, and I don't know if our manager will notice or if I need to do something to bring it up. What's the ideal solution for this? Maybe a stealth approach I haven't thought of? I don't want them to be fired...

But I'm scared to decline Amazon without a guaranteed job offer.

Has anyone read any interesting books on how to approach QA?

On my team, software engineers end up creating test cases by writing up step-by-step guides for each ticket. QA employees follow these and innovate them where they can - but they ultimately need SEs to provide them A LOT.

This process seems dumb - the test cases disappear after the ticket is completed and I feel like QA isn't much of a professional role if they just follow guides provided to them.

Is there a better way?
