So managers, when someone really smart is working for you, how you do you balance your personal interest (him/her continuing to work for you) and giving them an opportunity to flourish outside your team if it becomes available? My manager just made a comment about a colleague who is honestly great and deserving of a promotion, but that would mean he leaves our team.

Bad managers stop people from growth and success outside their team. Good managers encourage growth, even at the short term expense of their team.

A good manager won't hold someone back. I'm actively helping my favorite report leave right now because it's the right move *for her*.

Keeping them is only your personal interest in the short term. In the long term being a leader who grows and produces other leaders is far more valuable.

Look at it this way... smart, hard working team members will help your team succeed while taking your load off so you can focus on higher value add activities (thought leadership, selling etc.). If it means they will get promoted and move on within your company great, you get to provide another person that same growth opportunity. Win win win win.

Let them grow, it is another successful and high performing person you have in your network and will talk wonders about you. Life is a marathon. It is of your best interest that everyone you know becomes super successful, it will come back to you

I have been at the company since July and the end of year review is coming up. My supervisor has said they she does not think I should get a raise…enough before I started they knew I was in process of pursing my MBA. I finished my MBA in September. What should I do? I asked but she tells me she’s going to talk to her manager, but just blows me off. I think she wants to keep the ladies where she is at.

Any advice on how to ask for a raise a couple of months before it's time for my yearly review? My work product and proficiency has been consistently good and my firm just hired a new attorney (not yet licenses in the state) that I have been responsible for mentoring. Mentoring a new attorney has put extra stress on my daily work load and she is paid the same as me, which makes me think it's time to discuss my value at my firm.

I'm making an internal transfer to FAAS service line (out of audit) and only got a $2K raise. I was under the impression that FAAS gets paid a fair amount better than audit? Was I mistaken? For context: I'm leaving audit as a "top rated" S1. I'm already compensated at the top of the pay-band (as told to me by the recruiting team who are helping to transition me). I also applied for PWC CMAAS, but was offered the same exact compensation as EY and was told there was no room to negotiate.

My biggest takeaway in 2020: it’s okay to not get that lucrative tech offer or the insane pay raise to afford living in a tier 1 city. Priorities changed from career ambition to personal well being and now I’m moving closer to family where I can afford a home and plan to raise a family with my SO. Being in the city sometimes makes you forget about all the blessings that you already have
