So no I'm definitely not pardoning discriminatory behavior, I'm just saying there's a very simple root to all this. Lack of meaningful personal connections and exposure to diversity. Meeting one black guy or one asian woman at a conference and playing golf once doesn't make you liberal. But becoming good friends with them, having your family meet theirs and having meals together makes you start thinking that there's more to your own identity in this world; others are so much like you, we just are born into this world in different environments - this is what triggers liberalism.

One of the biggest challenges we have right now is that since the Republican Party has become the voice of the far right extreme, we don't really have a legitimate option for people who are conventionally liberal. We need actual debates about whether market-based or government regulations are the solution to climate change, not whether climate change exists. We need to figure out how to provide sustainable healthcare. We need a functioning two party system to represent the center left and center right where most of the country actually resides. And we need to stop confusing liberal with progressive.

No, I am way older than you and still feel the same. I want my kids to know democracy at it's best.

i've hit 30 and started a family and found myself more liberal than in my 20s... i want my son to grow some place worthwhile.

I'm 26 and I've been conservative since I was 12. I guess I'm just a heartless bastard.

And for the record, I'm probably older than any of you, but getting more liberal by the day.

The ones who get more conservative as they get older are the people who thought they were liberal because it was what their friends were doing. Not people who had an independent thought before 30.

Mid 30s, white, married, 2 kids, $350k HHI. All the privilege. Lifelong Republican. Proud Hillary supporter. This is some bullshit.

Well you might be the exception, not the rule Bernie Sanders

Same with D1. Always been extremely conservative. Lately it seems I've shifted to the liberal side. Still fiscally conservative though, but that seems out of style in both parties

Most people become more right wing, authoritarian, and rigid as they age because intellectual curiosity tends to decline in old age, and that this decline explains age-related increases in conservatism. The second reason is information processing capacity slows down. https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/mr-personality/201410/why-are-older-people-more-conservative

So to all you liberal older people: Your more intellectually curious and have faster processing powers than those conservative counterparts. 😁

Eh? OP WTF are you talking about? How did you form this conclusion? It's not like we post our ages when posting.

I guess some people don't get wiser as they grow older

There's nothing wrong with being in the middle. Both conservatives and liberals have ideals that I agree with, so I can't just pick one side. I do believe as you get older, other things become more important and your focus changes. I may be the minority, but neither side of the two parties capture all of my beliefs. I agree and disagree with multiple issues of both.

I was born and raised a diehard conservative. I'm 32 now and liberal AF.

Don't be stupid! Late 30s and liberal as f$@&. Actually the new wave is moving more liberal as they get older as opposed to previous years. The change you may ask? Diversity and more exposure!

33 liberal af- mainly because I don't want to be 60 and living in a planet that is 120 deg all the time.

Reflexive, condescending conservative-bashing isn't helping anyone. In fact, it helped Trump get elected. I didn't vote for him myself, but I know a lot of conservatives who were thinking of voting for Hillary this election but decided against it because of all the "anyone who is a Republican is a racist, sexist Nazi" stuff they heard coming from the liberal camp. I thought y'all were supposed to be welcoming and tolerant.

No, you're just not forming close enough relationships with people who are marginalized to empathize. A lot of it is situational, so arguably not your fault. *pat head*

op is older and no more mature with call outs and naming calling. your gonna be a great parent 😂

like

I'm a late 30s white family guy and I've been getting more liberal with age. Going into a business school and consulting helped as I gained more exposure to diversity of opinions.

Interesting. OP calls his/her peers immature for still being liberal, yet is the one to use the most name calling and immature responses. 🤔
