So my question is- How do we teach January 6th, 2021?

We don’t. Yet. Now we teach the founding concepts that allow students to understand government. I, personally, need more time reviewing history. I forget. I think about other things. I need to be the student for awhile and exercise my critical thinking skills.

I would love to teach the FACTS/TRUTH, but to be honest, no one knows what that is. Our media is so biased both ways, that there isn't a TRUTH anymore. I personally will not be teaching anything about it because I do not have the facts. I will, however, be teaching the Road to the Revolution because ironically that is where I am right now in my curriculum. I'm sure my student led discussions about how the history relates to our current times will be quite interesting to overhear.

Illinois seems to be a very angry person, which is sad. I hope they can cheer up. I’d probably feel the same way if I had to live under Mayor Lightfoot’s rule. 😂

Leave your opinions out of it, which will be hard for many to do.

Give them facts, ask questions, and let them form their own opinions. IMO, it’s not our job to share our political views in class. That’s what Facebook and other platforms are for. Please not in the classroom. Stay neutral, Switzerland.

like

You’re totally missing the point, and that’s OK. Just because I’m neutral when teaching middle school students and representing my school and district doesn’t mean I’m neutral in real life. Do you know my politics? Do you know how I feel about the events of last week? No you don’t, and neither do my students. 😃

If there is one thing we have learned in the last year, it is that civil reaction is okay. This "riot" was far more peaceful than the "peaceful protests" in Seattle, Portland, and Minneapolis. I think it is deceptive to address the events of Jan 6 without also discussing the other protests in our recent history.

Be honest and open with your students. Listen to them with an ear to understanding. Guide them to the law and the constitution of our nation. It is a lesson that can teach itself if handled honestly.

I did not teach about January 6th, 2021 as I honestly do not know what the truth is. The media is not a reliable source at this point in time. I used to proudly teach about the election process in a fair, unbiased way. There are too many opinions as well as too much anger to even touch the subject now.

I believe we can establish a certain amount of facts, many details are biased and murky but there is a set of facts that are known. We know there was an election, we know that Biden won that election and that Trump disputed the results. We know that Trump took his case(s) to Court seeking to amend or nullify the reported results of the election, he did not win any of his court cases, at least not to affect any change in the results. We know that the electoral college certified election results and voted Biden to be the next president, we know that Congress convened to certify the results of the electoral college on January 06 as required by our constitution, we know that congress certified those results after an attack forced the session to pause and shelter in place. Can we not teach that after an election, many legal challenges to the results, an electoral college vote and certification of the electoral college vote by a duly elected congress that by rule of law Biden is supposed to be our 46th president, now trying to explain why trump refused to accept the results or continues to claim fraud is speculation and unknown but it is known that under our current system he has lost, pretending that there is much unknown or that biased media is not reflective of these known facts seems disingenuous

Interesting question. I was sitting with my 10th grade ESL student from the Ukraine. I had my laptop on to watch the electoral vote count in the chamber. I was explaining how the process worked and who the main players were (Pence, etc). When the news broke about the storming of the capitol building I found myself in a perplexing dilemma. How do I not show my partiality? It was difficult given how visibly upset I was. I told the student that our country traditionally has a peaceful transition of power and that this event was the first in my lifetime.

Great question! Reminds me of standing in my classroom watching an airplane hit the World Trade Center along with a stunned group of 16-year-old students. Tough stuff. You’ll be fine...proceed with caution.

Every country has a coup, January 6 2021 was the start of ours. Many of our nations enemies may be outside our boarders, but it appears we are our own worse enemy. Why do I feel like we are in the first chapter of a dystopian novel?

Hollywood made a movie about hunting down Trump voters. It was released when we all shut down in mid March, so it did not get a lot of publicity. I thought that was shocking. However, I think violence is glamorized in Hollywood and in our culture so that rioting and using force to convey your thoughts is very acceptable to many.

I used Facing History they had questions prepared that keep the students engaged

Received feedback from a fellow black colleague (new to the team) that I am too direct. Today is also my last day with the company. In the past month or so, this colleague has continuously ignored my emails, requests, direct mentions in group chats. Today they mentioned that they put up a wall due to a comment I made during stand up several months ago. I don't even recall the comment. But why wait until today?? The microagressions we deal with at work is stressful enough.
