Depends on the firm and the state. MA has some laws preventing a bunch of disclosures so employers here will basically just verify that you worked there. Also depends on HR vs a reference manager. If they are calling someone you worked with as a reference it's totally different than an employment verification with HR.
HR should just say that you worked at the firm and the dates of employment. So I wouldn't worry about the manager.

Most firms will only confirm dates of employment and no further information.
Unless you sign allowing otherwise, firms typically will only disclose length of employment, ending position, and active/inactive status.
