So, new GPS per diem Q, i get that if you go to team dinner and it’s paid for you just don’t check the dinner box for that day, but is the system really smart enough to catch you if you did?

That’s what expense auditors look for... I hear defrauding your client is frowned upon

like

Question of ethics. If somebody from deloitte paid for your dinner and charged it to deloitte do you feel ok double charging deloitte? Come on. You must have better morals than that.

like

I guess the question you’re really asking is “how likely am I to be fired for expense fraud if I do this?”

like

^^ very likely if caught! OP - people get fired for expense issues, no doubt about it

like

At KPMG, you have to put the names of the people that diner with you if you are the one handling the entire expense. I've accidently claimed per diem for a meal someone senior paid for and the system kicks it back and says that you're unable to claim a meal that has already been claimed for you.

like

Fed is even worse. Defrauding the gov is illegal.

like

Not true there are rules. Such as day of travel and you absolutely can reduce if your meal was paid elsewhere which is tracked. I’m a manger and when I pay for folks I absolutely put their names. Stop trying to cheat expenses, it will ruin your career.

like

I’m not HR. I guess that’s what an HR person would say...

Assuming your manager approves your expenses, they might deny the expense if they know about the dinner

Don’t risk it in an audit, and have some integrity.

Wow... SHAMEEEEEEE

What is this per diem news? Is this in federal?

Not at KPMG. Firm-wide policy is Senior associate and below must bill per diem. Manager and above can bill actuals or per diem at their discretion

D5, yeah federal OP I’ve genuinely forgotten to check that thing before several times. Sometimes my SM kicks it back, others not.

That s what project controller do, reconcile expenses and bust your ass

I’m gonna list out all the people in attendance when I pay for everyone. So, just remember that just because you didn’t check the dinner box doesn’t mean that the person who paid didn’t

So the policy is that you expense per diem for the day. I reviewed this for another project. It is surprising, but there will be no blowback for expensing a full day per diem. In fact, I don’t recall there being an option to remove one of the meals from the per diem option or period

Back again with a question for the McKinsey folks! 1. Is it true that if you are internal (specifically PD) you are not eligible for a performance bonus? Just base and the 401K profit sharing? 2. I know McKinsey offers a percentage of your salary into a retirement fund. The recruiter painted it as a range (from 7-12%), but other fish in the main consulting bowl said it’s either 7 OR 12% (no in between) based off of if you’re client facing or internal - which is true? To con't the conversation on engagement rings💍 - what do they symbolize to you? My BF and I got into a discussion about this last night. He views them as an investment and an "asset" on the books for his future family. He also has grandparents who had to finance their trip to America by selling their jewels. I see the ring as more of a gift to the future bride that is an expense that can be sold for money if needed, but isn't an investment. I'm fine w/ lab grown, he is not. Thoughts?

Maybe off-topic, but I’ve got a question related to taxes and withholding. 2020 was the first year that both me and my wife made full salaries in our high-paying jobs (she’s a pharmacist, I’m in consulting). We don’t do anything out of the ordinary to reduce our taxes, we just put ~ 6% each towards our 401k’s. No house or kids so our other deductions are limited. Just started doing taxes and got a shock that we owe big. Any others in this situation? Do you just withhold a ton extra on W4?
