This is not ageist. You can create at any age.
The problem with this job post is that it prefers people with a side hustle. This is a barrier to diversity.
Because the only people who have the **spare time** and **funding** to make **quality** side projects are people who have money to spare, and are not overworked to the bone just trying to survive. The job poster doesn’t realize this, because she’s oblivious.
But it doesn’t require a side hustle. In fact it leads with “for a brand” meaning prior work experience or “for yourself” which broadens the applicant pool to anyone with a smartphone and creative talent.
I know we’re all ready to save the world and fix all the problems, but I think we’re searching for things to get up in arms about.
And to the original point about being “ageist,” it asked for a set of skills relevant to the job. Sure those skills are more common with younger people, but there’s no reason an older candidate couldn’t demonstrate aptitude. Unless of course, they don’t have the skills for this job.
is this ageist though? I feel like a prerequisite for understanding social and the internet for a job that’s about creating content for social and the internet is kind of fair. whether you’re 6 or your 60 the rules still apply. I can see how you might read this and be like they only want hip young people but that’s probably just because only hip young people make this stuff. not really sure what the solution here is, but I don’t think this post is like totally uncouth.
I don’t think a 6 year old should be creating content for social and the internet.
Age aside, pretty sure I don’t want to work with a freelancer who has “generated conversation and attracted a following“ for themselves on one of those platforms, can you imagine what a little ego monster that person might be?
Weird all this time I thought massive ego was a prerequisite for getting hired as a creative.
Seasoned creatives who fail to keep current are not victims of ageism.
Hey now. I’m often one of the first here to call out BS ageist posts. And I don’t see this as ageist whatsoever. They seem to have a particular need with someone well-versed in those platforms, and in fact, they’re asking for an experienced creative who has actually succeeded with a following on tik-tok, etc.
Rising Star
This sounds ageist but we as an industry gotta stay up on where people are at instead of relying on places we're most comfortable.
Nothing stopping an older person from being all these things.
I read it as — a content driven creative vs a concept driven creative. But I also see your point.
I see what you’re getting at, but they’re asking for people who understand those platforms. If you’re older and get it, I’m sure you’ll still be in the running.
Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you can’t stay up to date with current platforms. Like how many older ADs started with flash and dreamweaver that took the time to utilize and understand Figma? Same concept.
Agree on all replies, maybe it was kneejerk, but there are just so many dog whistles lately for "old people can piss off"—e.g. been told by recruiter friends that "social-first/understanding internet culture/have big social following" is often code for NO ONE OVER 40, FULL STOP—but yes, creatives of any age should be flexible and skilled enough to adapt.
Why do creatives have to tap dance to get a job? Agencies need to know that the creatives they want are mostly *behind* the camera, not in front of it.
This is not ageist, these are the major social platforms where brands want to be
also love how creatives are expected to live and breathe these platforms outside of work in order to be qualified. like expecting the person hired to paint your house to also paint houses in their free time. maybe a planner or strategist can get off their “too busy” asses and come up with a content strategy?
This is not ageist and I’m not sure how much more clear one can be about what qualifications they’re looking for.
My gran is a TikToker, can she not apply?
I think all this post did was out yourself that you're not staying on top of trends and culture, which can definitely age you out. I know a late 40s creative who just came up with a metaverse campaign and plenty of others in the 40s - 50s range that have done TikTok ideas. I hate TikTok and I'm older, but you better believe I can come up with ideas for it.
“For brand OR for yourself.” Doesn’t mean you personally have to have a large social following, it looks like they’re just opening up an avenue for those who may not come from a traditional agency background but are great at social.
Damn what a stretch.
Social media team seems to be the appropriate term to use for this post. Keep in mind just because you can do more than Just social doesn't mean you are disqualified.
As creatives, especially conceptual creatives, we know that great ideas can live in any medium. So the focus is usually on ideas, design, typography, writing, and skills, not where the content will live. It is important to know the platform and how it is used, but it is not our primary concern.
Also, when it comes to skills, design, and style, the farther you are from the current trends, the better it is. Because that means you may create the next trend or big style rather than follow what is hot today!
Unfortunately, it is difficult to understand for some.
Wut? I don't see anything about "no old people." Maybe I am old? 🤔
