Why are u upset by this? I love to see ppl finally be proud of who they are..
I agree with OP on this one. They do not present as black, and they are not Afro Latinas. I can’t suddenly start calling myself Asian after years of identifying as Black. Let’s just agree Cardi is problematic. I love her music, but I don’t trust her intentions on this.

I really cant stand post like this. Who made you the litmus test for what Black is? Cardi is dominican and trini... both BLACK nations.
Jlo is calling herself negra in a song which is a term of endearment used very commonly in latin america. My friends called me “ negra/ negris/ morena”.

She did start doing that until recently. Who said people can call themselves as black when convenient because they see it will get them a pay check? She calls a dead black boy a monkey one minute, calls black women roaches, the next, and then calls herself Black when she gets too much heat and you guys roll with it all. Ridiculous
Lets break this down.. First are we saying Cardi isn't black?

This post proves colorism is sadly alive and well. Unfortunately to most, we are all considered and treated black regardless of our hue. Yes, my dark skin brothers and sisters have an additional level of complexity to their blackness, but so do our black LGBT family, or ones who grew up with less financial resources, etc. The nuances vary and attribute to our individual stories.
At the end of the day, this self proclaimed litmus test of blackness that OP is painting with a broad stroke is doing nothing to advance our causes.

We the Afro-Latino delegation take Cardi B.
Guess we all need to post selfies and let OP put us in his/her categories (since we don’t know what race we are).
I can mostly get behind OP’s above post but it might be the hen🐕.

Cardi is actually half Dominican half Trinidadian. I have other Afro-Latino friends that consider themselves Black especially if they are from NYC /the northeast and were socialized with a lot of Black people. But also, she's literally half Black who are you to say someone can't claim their heritage.
Negrita is definitely a Puerto Rican term of endearment. We have to chill with all this outrage over every little thing without all the facts. Isn't there something else to get riled up about? 🙄
@Senior Accountant in my opinion, it is about a shared heritage. The ancestors of those light skinned southern women lived through Red Lining and Jim Crowe and Slavery in this country. Somebody like Viola Davis has more in common with Alicia Keys than Chimamanda Adichie despite the fact that Viola and Chimamanda are both dark skinned.

Cardi took OP’s man 🤣🤣.
With all that’s going on, I quite frankly don’t give a shit about this, and I really wonder why you’re so laser focused on this 🧐

JLo is black for music, white for movies.

Speaking of the Kimyes. I would argue that Kanye's profile got better after he married Kim because she comes off as the one who grounds him when he has his manic phases but also vice versa with hers as well.

Jlo was using a form of slang/endearment not calling herself “black”

I'd like to know that as well - that's something to ponder...

So I’m trying to understand you’re post OP. My mother is Jamaican (Dark Skinned) and my dad is white (Pale). I have a similar shade as Cardi and was born/grew up in the USA. Am I not black to you?
You actually could have a point there but does what she said change her race? Her ratchet self was black back then too. I think we all know that that’s a thing among Dominicans.
I’m reading thru these posts trying to be open minded and see where you’re coming from with this. Looks like you dug yourself a deeper hole with each post. Might as well quit while your behind.

You're a stranger on the internet. I don't even know if you're black. Why would I care about your alleged blackness?
This is exactly why race is a subjective, social construct made up by the white man
So it seems as though the issue is the flip flopping of Cardi, JLo, etc. which I can get but OP your message gets muddled when you post pics of Cardi’s parents as if to say they don’t look black. That makes you sound like the arbiter of blackness which I’m sure wasn’t your intent. The issue arises when you start to allege that by looks alone (not flip floppiness) people aren’t black. It comes off as dismissive to 100% light skinned black ADOS. That’s an issue.

Whaaaaa? Being engaged to a Dominican does not make one black, JLipsinger.
What interview was this from?
😂🤣
Latinx is an ethnicity, not a race. Y’all are throwing around ethnicities and nationalities as if you can’t be a black (or white) AND of certain ethnicities. A simple history lesson (or trip to Central orSouth America) will show you that you can be a black Cuban, a white Mexican, and on and on.
Black does not mean African AMERICAN only.
White people started separating out Latinos (still do, if you look at survey options) to distinguish between those who are European and those who aren’t. They were revoking the white membership cards. That’s why Spaniards can be interesting. They are European (so they think they are better than other Latinos), but when they speak Spanish, other white Europeans give them the side eye. 🤣
They black when they get rich, lol. When they poor—they everything BUT black. Sad but 100% true.
