Sort of? If you’re interested in the industry but not in planning (which I FEEL YOU on), there are lots of options to directly translate skills. Would you like to do some project management and use your existing strengths? See if your agency would take you on as an investment in new biz. Does your agency have a content, production, etc team? See if your background could add value there. I did something similar and a quarter into a new role I am blown away by the clarity getting the f out of the weeds has brought. Six months ago I might have been inclined to take another agency job because *anything* would have been better. And now I’m learning a ton about something new - and also about what brings me joy work-wise. All while not having to roll over my 401k. It’s possible!
I switched over to the planning side at a creative agency and have ZERO regrets. Small salary cut but worth it. Works for me because it’s more cerebral, focused on story-telling, less detail-oriented, and less urgency. My inbox went from hundreds a day to about a dozen. I barely touch Excel.
I like that. Except the salary cut 💔
If you like your current agency but not the planning department, try to identify other things you might like to do in the agency that would fulfill an agency business need. Put together a one pager of what you would like to do and why it benefits the agency for you to do that and start shopping it around to HR, to your direct boss, and to any other leadership that may benefit from you taking on this new role. Good luck!
