So the county I live in and the surrounding 3 counties have a total of 120 deaths from COVID. Yet we are still on full lockdown. I really don’t think a blanket lockdown is the best method.

Leaders have to make critical decisions based on medical and scientific advice and enforce prevention guidelines (such as a lockdown). Real leaders don’t make decisions based on opinions on ‘best’ methods and emotions “you can’t play god”. If you don’t like to calculated decisions or following medical advice, you would be a great fit for the Trump administration.

SC1, are you kidding me? With as large as the US is and the approximate rate of infection, it’s easy to extrapolate what the death toll would be with NO social distancing or lockdowns in place. Come on now, you’re completely detached from reality.

I can see your POV, OP. I think counties have to see what is best for them and their residents based on their density and hospitalization availability. But I think county officials are following the states, because if one county opens then there is some risk that people will travel in or travel out and folks aren’t sure what the impacts will be so they chose to stay cautious with shelter in place policies. I’m in the Bay and know we will probably be on lockdown for a while but a few lower populated counties are slowly reopening. It’ll be interesting to see how it goes.

Or, you know, you took preventative measures, they likely played a role in mitigating COVID and keeping your deaths so low (so far)?

like

OP, NYC waited too long to take those measures and it got us where we have been. Given what I saw for myself here, your lockdown was probably a good idea. They held off on closing everything here and it was definitely running through the schools given the number of teachers and community members who got sick - definitely true in my neighborhood. It was brutal here for a while. Given the asymptomatic carriers, you literally have to do that piece before you think you need it or you’re closing the metaphorical barn door after the horses are gone. The question nobody seems able to answer to everyone’s satisfaction is when it’s safe to come out and how we do that. It’s incredibly complicated. All of the impacts you mention are real problems, but that doesn’t mean the initial precautions were wasted.

No one in the US has been on "full lockdown." We've had some inconveniences and some restrictions that harmed our economy, but we're not being held in our homes by armed guards. Your trash still gets picked up. You can order food for delivery. You can watch Netflix at full streaming speed. You can go for a walk. We have no concept in the US of what a real lockdown is.

People will die so why bother with medicine and worker safety and seat belts amirite????? Do you even know what youre saying or implying? Unemployment is temporary. Death is permanent. Tell me which one is preferable

like

It’s obviously not the best method. The reason we’re doing it is because we haven’t ramped up our medical, testing, and contact tracing capacity. Once we get those up, it will be safe to open up more, but saying we’re overplaying the risk is NOT the way to ensure resources are dedicated to that.

Goalposts have been very much moved. Fake News big time there.

the lockdown is to ease the number of people seeking treatment so our health care system doesn’t fall apart. as the number of hospitalizations declines then the restrictions can ease. sheesh.

OP, I’m supporting local business in NYC too. I don’t need to be out and about putting myself at risk in order to do so. We have no idea what the result of Georgia’s early opening will be. I tend to err on the side of caution, clearly others don’t - so go ahead and go out. I’ve had enough loved ones die from the virus to take all the Trump thumpers (which the vast majority of lockdown protestors seem to be) seriously. Good luck to youX

You never really know if there is a “full lockdown”. You can be doing your job, staying at home, and socially distancing yourself. But another person may be completely ignoring all of the rules that were put in place. These people are still gathering in public places, do not wear face masks, and do not wash their hands. These people may be the reason (along with the possibility of many other) why a “blanket lockdown” isn’t working.

You like having the peeing section of swimming pools, don’t you?

like

AS1- is just taking every chance they have to shout their opinion over my own. In FC1s statement I am at a swimming pool, since I do not own one myself I assume it would be a public one. So to answer your question if I had to piss and no bathroom was open the one at my house unfortunately wouldn’t do the trick.

Are you in an Asian country? It’s interesting looking at the low number of deaths/death per millions in some of Asian countries. Much lower than European counties and US. Blanket lockdowns suck but at least they give you a chance.

Lol I think the mention of a strict lockdown confused me...there is nowhere in the US under a strict lockdown.

Death, taxes, mob rule......

I don’t think blanket lockdowns make sense but you should also take into consideration hospital availability and icu beds/ventilators. My dad’s in Japan and even though the people there don’t seem too worried, he said he’s read articles where paramedics drove for hours to get a hospital to take a covid patient. Maybe a month ago, not sure if it’s calmed down now.
