The NYC hating comes from a handful of the same people over and over. Don’t let their negativity bring you down.
I think it’s great to come back! Who knows when you’ll have kids- a year, two, or five. Enjoy it! I grew up in the south too and can’t really imagine going back.
I grew up in Brooklyn and absolutely love that I was raised there. Wish I could raise my children there as well.
I don't see why *other* people hating NYC would we a reason you wouldn't want to live there. If you hated it I'd say yeah, then don't live there
And if you're talking about 400-450k, I can't imagine you having any difficulty affording life here. We live in one of the city's most expensive neighborhoods, and we do well but we make a bit less than that. Depends on how many kids you're planning to have, maybe. And for us we use public school so that may be a factor (for all the negativity, there are still thousands of public schools in this city and many are good even if not all are).
But if you're a senior manager then you're probably somewhat knowledgeable about budgets and forecasts. You and/or SO should just draw one up for yourself; I'm sure you can do that pretty easily. And this is also helpful because even making that much money, it isn't infinite and you still should have a budget.

Considering kids. SO is on board with move too. Just want to make sure I’m not being fiscally reckless. We may 300k hhi in south right now which is a lot. We would make somewhere between 400-450k in nyc
Q1 please go elsewhere to spit your hate of NYC. You’ve made it crystal clear you don’t like it and think no one should live here. Now go back to suburban life.
At your income level, it’s hard to imagine how your kids would go without anything, even in neighborhoods like the UWS or Battery Park City. It’s simply a question of whether the attributes of urban living are superior in your mind than those of your current life, for kids.
