There’s an art to giving criticism in a way that inspires people to be better
Nope. Actually happy with direct feedback for the most part... but when people like to tell you how direct they are or wear it like a badge of honor it tends to mean they are more of a bully than just ‘straight shooting’ . It’s pretty easy to be like that when you are more senior than everyone else in the room. I also find it’s these folk who haven’t actually come up with a good idea in a very very long time....
Anyone who says, “low hanging fruit,” is an idiot
And FYI ‘being direct’ doesn’t actually count as a skill (look, see I am doing it now! It’s easy, lazy even....)
"i am so type A" = I am going to be an asshole
When someone says "I am a straight shooter" before they give unpleasant feedback they are telegraphing that they are worried about delivering said feedback. Inherently, if this is required then the feedback is likely a surprise to the recipient. This speaks volumes about the straight shooter's poor communication ability.
The best way to deliver negative feedback is to be very fact based and direct. But no one is all negative in all aspects. I try to ensure to share 3 observations, 2 positive and 1 constructive in all my feedback sessions. And these should be regular events, not after an emergency meltdown.
This agency “is a family”...
"I am a leader " = I expect you to work as a team but don't expect me to
"taking a step back " = I think my point of view is superior to anyone elses
In my experience people who are proud to be “straight shooters” tend to be absolute assholes and get insanely defensive when you “tell it like it is” to them.
I like to call the 3 observation approach "the shit sandwich". Positive feedback bookends the constructive feedback. 🍞💩🍞
It really does work.
👆 Gag. Me. Strongly dislike this one.

“Work hard, play hard” in an interview as a description of the culture
And agreed Havas 1 (the above was for SAD 1!)
“The headline is” which means whatever that is doesn’t matter - it’s everything that follows which is usually a pile of shit or some piece of criticism with the intent to intimidate or undermine
