We just got rid of an intern who claimed she was proficient in excel because she was a double major (accounting and finance specifically). But when asked to run some formulas down a work sheet, she manually entered the outputs instead of actually using a formula. 🤦🏻♀️ At least it makes for good stories to look back on.
I took a week off to go skiing during my internship but I told the partner up front during my interview.
Had a guy interviewing that asked if I looked at his resume. I said yes. He asked if I understood everything on there. I said yes. While asking a behavioral question he said he was juggling caring for his ill grandma, college classes, and a full time job. I proposed some suggestions, such as asking his manager for less hours, as a possible answer for how he juggled them successfully. He said “I asked you if you understood my resume. Clearly you didn’t. I’m the founder and CEO of my company. I set my own hours.” Needless to say, he wasn’t hired.
It’s a “consulting” firm. Probably just resume fluff. And his dad is a Deloitte partner. But even his own firm didn’t want him. He’s now with KPMG in another city where he was able to hide his ego during the interview process. I bet he’s a joy to work with.
Sounds like someone needs to make this intern a spirit breaking to-do list
The purpose of doing this? 🤦♂️ I'm guessing he's one of those people who is convinced he has a photographic memory but fails to show any evidence of such a skill.

This is absolutely the intern that’s gonna barge into the CFO’s office and accuse them of committing massive fraud

No lack of confidence among the interns. 😂
He even asked us if we could schedule a catch-up call for him to connect with one of the most senior partners in the big practice group lol
I simultaneously have respect for, and am super annoyed by, this intern. Some people are kick ass and will become experts, but as The Rock says…

That's exactly the issue: role ambiguity. Interns don't know their role because it's not explained to them. They're just supposed to be so enamored by all of the unnecessary dinners at restaurants they'll never go to again with partners they'll never see again. And then they are supposed to go out and "launch their career" and "stand out from the rest." They are so manipulated and pawned around (kinda like everyone else is).
Have had an intern like this - he did not get an offer.
sometimes with team members like this you just need to tell them straight up- i’m not asking you i’m telling you…after you’ve exhausted the diplomatic channels of course. then after that it’s the telling them that they need to work on their attitude, to be coachable, or that they are behind their peers and at risk
It starts with campus recruiting. We roll out the red carpet for these primadonnas, tell them how great they are, etc. etc. Add to that the so-called war on talent. They think they have us in the palm of their hand. After their first busy season as new hires, they have a new found perspective on things.

Promote that kid straight to P
Will recommend him to be the keynote speaker for next all-hands call 👍
This is why you need a few Pit Bull seniors. If in office they would be taken somewhere private and receive an ass-chewing.

both horrified and amused. and wait, I'm sure he/she also wants to interact directly with the CFO of the client LOL
Wow lmao

Completely agree, but what do you really expect out of interns who are told things like "you have to build your brand" or "you have to set your self apart." Truth be told, the firms like having a number of these overzealous interns around. It helps induce turnover on engagement teams, which they want.

Exactly. And if you think about it, it's extremely unprofessional and has no place in an industry that is supposedly serving the public trust.
It would take everything in me not to laugh in their face
Wow that intern has guts. I remember when I was an intern that I was just hoping I didn't screw anything up at work. I certainly didn't act like the partner on an engagement 😂 at best maybe like an associate.

Had an intern at an audit (tax specialists) of a F100 client. First Friday we were going out to lunch. Invited him. He says: shouldn’t we take the VP of tax with us. It’s just a manager, senior and a few associates. We say no. He decides to March into the VPs office and tell him to come to lunch with us. Intern missed our team lunch and the VP called our partner. Apparently the kid was super pushy and wouldn’t leave the VP’s office.
Have 2 ears people (intern). Listen!!!!
I would love to have someone with less experience and know-how say that to me. Love the comebacks. I've seen some interns act like that and when they get hired it's a completely different story. They disappear from the scene after a month or two, and quite a few are gone soon after. I think it may be that they realize they acted like jerks and don't feel they can ask for help or they truly believe that they're better than others and they have nothing to learn from them.
If this intern worked on my team I’d make sure to make it so they don’t get an offer lol
There was a time when interns made the coffee runs, dinner runs, and made photocopies.
That was me. Did it as a first year too. In the days when you had to order over the phone and go out and pick it up yourself, regardless of the weather. And pray that they didn’t screw up the order. It built character, I was told. My first senior put me in charge of buying candy for him when he ran out. Which was often. I was the “candy associate”. That’s what they called me. Imagine doing that these days? At least he let me charge the expense to the client code.
Have a staff like this on my job. Granted I’ve only been around a year, but they’re constantly telling me what to do or questioning the way I’ve done things in a condescending manner. It’s getting really old lol
Good grief. I really don’t get people like that. Do they not realize that they need other people to like them in order to be successful?
