So we went from daily topics about salary raises to recession layoffs in the span of about 2 months. Do we just like operating in the extreme?

Right? It’s like people forget that middle ground exists.

The economy works like that. 2007 was a huge boom year, and even in the summer of 2008 the party was still going (although the warning signs were there). Then in September Lehman failed and the music stopped. It was incredible how quickly everything turned. For what it’s worth, I think this correction is more like the early 2000s than 2008, so there will be some pain but nothing like the financial crisis.

The economy was terrible since COVID, it only looked good on paper because businesses scammed the government for PPP money to exist when they should have all failed and bored people at home blew their assistance checks and savings on meme stocks overvaluing everything else. Now we’re going back to what it should have been in the first place

Any advice on how to handle an ECD in charge of your salary who says the only way to get a promotion or even a COL raise of any kind is through winning an award? Not consistently reliable and solid performance. Not keeping the client happy and profitable. “You either win an award, or all ya get is to keep your job.”
And yes, I’m aware leaving is always an option, but eager for any other advice how to navigate.

Had someone lateral into our firm as a fifth year (soon to be sixth). They were kind of a retool and went from small law to the firm I’m at. They sometimes ask me for help with stuff, but I’m just getting annoyed at this point. Can I just say “no” since they’re about to be a mid/senior associate who should know all of this?
