Movers + Shakers? What do you know?
What is meant by penetration%
It's hard to generalize about a whole company. For example, my friend at AWS told me corporate and cloud are the best teams to work for - better WLB, etc. So do your research about the team you want to join too.
Worked at 3 faang companies, never complained about wlb
Let me make sure I’m getting this right.
These companies collectively employ close to 1M FTEs worldwide. You’re saying they’re all suffering from poor WLB across every function?
Google is changing with Pichai already ranting publicly about people not working hard enough. Amazon and Apple were always intense and work best for experienced folks who know how to prioritize and get organized.
If you’re good at your job then work life balance is pretty awesome. But if you struggle then you lose trust and autonomy pretty quickly. Also, you still have to get hired. No guarantees you get to join one of the FAANG companies just because you’ve been avoiding them up until now.
Some managers are two faced - they hire a team and encourage jackholery among them. That’s toxicity with a spin.
Currently at a FAANG and i can say that google does a really good job of promoting work life balance. I'm not in a tech position but haven't heard any horror stories from colleagues yet.
My 2 cents: Big tech companies have so many vastly different divisions its like working for a different company. Saying working in FAANG is all bad is like saying living in XYZ country is all bad. There's some amazing orgs, teams and bosses, and there's some bad ones. I would not disqualify yourself from the potential of a great opportunity because of heresy.
Moved from C1 to Amazon. I work about 40 hours a week. Massive scope up,responsibilities, and pay.
I was a contractor for a Capital One prior to jumping ship to Microsoft. Not sure how it was in your domain at C1, but working in card fraud was one of the worst experiences of my life. I'm glad you got our
At Amazon and WLB is amaze. Long as you know what you’re doing lol
Rising Star
Yep! Super flexible too - you can choose which 12 hour you want to work on a given day.
Really depends on the team you’re on and your manager. Part of it is up to you in setting expectations up front if possible. In general most of the teams I’ve been on at google had decent WLB.
Which FAANG is best for coasting?
All and none of them. Depends on who you work for!
I know people who work at those companies and have a fine work/life balance... probably because they're difficult to push around, I think more agreeable engineers do get exploited somewhat.
Please don't feed the beast, though. The future of civilization hangs in the balance.
what’s the pay look like at google?
Worked at Google for many years, WLB has been stellar the whole time. Pay is great too but you can look up specifics per level/location online.
Started a few months ago as a BIE at Amazon and was extremely surprised with the great WLB after all the horror stories I heard. Working 40 hours a week max as a high performer. Love the team I ended up with.
Working for Amazon is amazing, it’s the authorized AWS resellers companies that are the true pain in the arse to work for and people need to weary of. Many of them are unstable, over hire and then layoff employees within 3-6 months after hiring them. I literally watched a reseller out of Colorado push to get someone that stable was with another company for like 15 years. The company courted them and promised longevity and higher compensation, offered to pay them a salary of $125k ($60.10/hr), unlimited PTO, full benefits etc… then turned around 4 months later and issue them an RIF letter. They literally were 5 years from retiring and were comfortable at their old job even though it paid $40k less. Now they’re on unemployment after being bamboozled by the AWS APN company.
Apple/Amazon are sweaty but if you like what you do it’s not a huge problem. Coming from consulting I still increased my WLB
What's FAANG?
