So when did Big Tech become this ruthless? Do they have any special data markers on the basis of which they make these decisions? I always saw Google as this 'do no evil' company but it was no different in this wave of layoffs.

My LinkedIn feed is giving me anxiety 😔

We went through the greatest bull run in market history, leading to rampant speculation and money pumped into tech stocks. That gave them reason to over-hire and explore new projects, ones they wouldn't have been comfortable pursuing in a different environment.

When the market brings tech stocks down like this, companies that over-hired now need to correct. Layoffs aren't evil, they're part of the business. Tech has always been the most volatile industry for a reason.

like

Our revenue in 2016 was $90B, then $161B in 2019, then $258B in 2021. It's not just our stock price, it's everything that was on an absolute tear.

like

It’s not good or evil.

It’s a for profit business and not a charity. Nobody complains when stock go up 100 times and your comp quadruples for the same job. This is the other side of the cycle and it always happens, and will continue to happen

Maybe this got lost somewhere between last few recessions and now or this is your first. It’s amusing to me that people will come out with “humanitarian “ arguments when just last year people were bragging about the great resignation and quiet quitting.

like

Agreed I found quiet quitting or overworking disgusting. Hopefully those will be the people effected by the lay off.

smart

Always keep that in mind...everyone is a fair weather friend. Empathy......only during good times is the complete sentence.

Always remember they care a lot more about their shareholders than you.

like

They had to get harsher because too many tech works aren’t productive and work only a few hours a day. When they command huge salaries for little to no work/value, eventually no new products/services are released, margins tighten, shareholders get tired of subsidizing high salaries so people can play video games all day, and layoffs result. So TLDR, not ruthless at all. They’re doing what is necessary to right size their companies and start creating gains for their shareholders.

like

Others have said this too but to me it’s not that they did this, it’s how they did it. 15 year employees woke up to just find themselves blocked. There were even people on work trips that got cut off mid trip. Credit card access got cut off so they couldn’t change their flights to get home faster after learning they had been let go. It just seems so inhumane and also chaotic for zero reason.

like

That’s an easy one… HR is always the least talented/intelligent bunch in any org. They rarely get anything right on a normal day, let alone while executing a layoff. 😅

funnylike

Every company out there has as a core value how much they care about their people… until they’re not making “enough” money, then everyone is on the block.

like

Tech massively over-hired through the last cycle. Twitter went from 7,500 employees to 1,300 and still seems to be running fine

likesmart

Because Google was never that nice to begin with once you looked past the nap pods and free meals. I get it - these are for profit companies - but the way they are treating people being let go is absolutely ruthless. When you work for a company for years and years, and you wake up at 6am to a dead network connection and a you’re toast email, that’s just cold and inhuman. Do you get to keep your job any longer by being terminated in person? No, but at least you don’t feel like an outdated piece of furniture when the time comes. Absolutely horrible behavior by a company that size and scale.

Let’s all remember that sure, the hiring was fast and furious during the pandemic, but none of these massive tech companies started 2023 suddenly losing money, and a lot of the people I’m seeing across the spectrum aren’t those over hired new people, but rather the 8, 10, 15+ year team members, many of them strong performers. To me, these massive cuts spread like a virus, where a company can get away with huge workforce reductions by blending into all the other cuts happening elsewhere.

I’ve seen plenty of people let go over the years who could have easily pivoted into a different area of the business that never had the chance, even when logically it would have made a lot more sense. Reality is that culling them *might* appease the shareholders, while mutating them rarely make the headlines.

If you see Google as a do no evil entity then I’d see an optometrist.

Why do people stay in one company that long in the first place? I thought you get pay bump when you switch companies 🤔? Am I missing something?

funny

Senior engineers at Google get paid really well and, if you're already comfy and have a house right next to campus, leaving for a 10% raise at Uber with a 1+ hour commute into SF (for example) doesn't look that appealing in comparison.

like

Sad as this is as these are all real people: many of these job losses are from “pie in the sky” big bets that have no line of sight to profitability. I’ve spoken with many classmates and peers affected by the recent losses and some knew that they were working on programs that were far fetched, others were shocked that tech needed to focus on “profit over mission.” In the end none of us will ever be fully protected from layoffs but the best thing you can do I know how your org makes money and get as close to critical to that as you can.

Hi all, I got laid off from my current company (product based) a month ago. Since then I've been looking for new opportunities. I got an offer from a good product based company with a good package and also my current company offering me rehire with promotion and a good package. I have a good rapport with my current manager, and he played a major role in offering this rehire opportunity. I'm confused about making the right decision here. Kindly share your views. Both offers are pretty much same.

I feel a little crazy saying this, but more money at this point doesn’t resonate. I see a ton of exit planning and boomerang threads here, but I’d take a 50% pay cut (or a 50% raise) for an exciting role. That’s totally privilege talking, but I just can’t imagine chasing extra money in PE or lateraling just for the money. No virtue signaling here at all. I actually worry on some level that I’m somehow a moron for not giving a thought to maximizing earnings.
