Freestyle video concepting. Just keep the Skype/FaceTime feed constantly on while you both talk and brainstorm. Don’t be in a hurry to end the call. It could last a couple hours. It kind of simulates sitting next to your partner, you could even have small talk. All the notes and ideas are written on paper during the video call. It has to be on paper, not on the computer, the ideas flow better that way when the computer is treated solely as a window into your partner. After a good session, we’ll hang up and transfer the ideas into Google Slides.
I’ve already blocked of an hour each day for the lunch I’m allowed but can never take. My partner and I have FaceTimed a few times and not just for work work. We FaceTimed just to bitch on Friday. That has helped maintain our normal flow.
I’m in NYC and don’t have roommates, so my space isn’t ideal for working, but I’ve repositioned my plants to give myself a desk. Day one I worked from my couch. Do not do that. Wake up. Shower. Get dressed. Sit at your makeshift desk and get shit done.
This is our chance guys. A majority of our jobs can be done remotely. It’d be great if there wasn’t a global pandemic and we could go to the office if we needed to, but we SHOULD NOT right now. Let’s prove that our work can be done from anywhere and make WFH normal.
Being really responsive TO requests helps buy you time to WORK on the requests. Be responsive and available and helpful and never forget that there’s a human on the other end of the computer.
“Takin’ a hearty #2”
Get yourself set up properly. A desk. A good computer set up as close to the office as you can. Get up, showered and dressed to start each day. If you’re doing video conferencing think about how the room looks and if you’re ok with what it’s going to look like behind you.
*if you find yourself distracted by micro chores or whatever, go ahead and throw that load of laundry in, but also make it your bathroom/get water break and make sure you are back at your desk within a designated amount of time like 5 or 10 min and keep track so you’re not continually getting up. If you think of something else you’d rather be doing again, jot it down and wait to do it on your next reasonable break.
I can’t recommend getting ready as if you’re going to work enough. It’s a mindset shift that really helps me get into a productive head space.
It sounds dumb, but I get dressed the way I would at the office and put my shoes on. For some reason, that mentally puts me in a work mode.
World of Warcraft on the left screen. Photoshop on the right screen.
I can’t stres this enough...put on pants. Not sweatpants but pants pants. You are there to work. Also put some time in on the weekends to make up for the inevitable drop in efficiency that comes with a shift in process. Equally important...at the end of the day take your pants off. Pour yourself a drink. WFH needs to have a quitting time too.
AM: pants.
PM: prance.
Got it.
Designate a work space that's just work. No games, tv, book, etc... That will help you focus and keep you from being in "home" mode.
Counter intuitive here (and writing as a regular freelance WFH person): embrace being at home. Sleep in. Do laundry. Start work at 11. Break from 2-4. Get baked. Work from 4-9.
this ^^ haha
We get on a call with each other and I put my headphones on for it. Then we just sit around spit balling. It works. Then we create slides. Then I reward myself with a quick 10 on Battlefront 2
And one habit I’ve picked up just with having global offices, is to offer “ringing” like you would knocking on an office door. Anyone can immediately just call me on Slack. If I’m busy, I decline and message them later. If I’m not, I pick up. Just like walking by someone’s office. If you set this expectation, you can avoid the 20 messages of “hey do you have a minute? … should I call?”
Agree. Also away messages that are specific really help set expectation. Out for lunch. Or back in five. Or in meeting.
I live in a 2 bed apartment with two kids. My productivity just went down 80%
No I meant it goes down 80%. It started at 60. So now I’m -20%
Wish I could but still not on a WFH policy
Get your work done in the same timeframe as you would at the office so companies can trust us to WFH in the future. Companies are going to be super worried about productivity and losing money so I think it’ll be helpful if we show we got this. Coffee and no working from bed 😂
This week*
Don’t work from your bed zzzz
Lol. Or not all the time.
Start working right when you wake up and thrn take a 2+ hour lunch.

It's a mental hack. Set your alarm. Get up. Go through your standard morning rituals. Brush your teeth, get dressed for work ( yes put on pants) make that pot of coffee. Have your workspace at home as similar to the office as possible. Work from the same spot each day. You will be amazed at how much you can accomplish once your pattern has been reset
