I would love for every elementary school in CPS to have what my school has:
2 fulltime counselors and an intern every year
1 fulltime social worker
1 fulltime case manager
a fulltime nurse
and most importantly...small class sizes.
Every child deserves this!
Fair pay!! Fair pay!! Fair pay!! Fair pay!! I'm tired of the fact that we treat education in this country as some blue-color profession. I wonder what teacher pay would be like if we had more men as teachers...
I agree.
I think the reason they dont have many men in the teaching profession is because men aren't going to take the crap dished out by some administrators, parents, and students for an insulting salary.
It's a two income world we live in.
Women have tolerated way too much in the workplace for too long.
Thank you for the solidarity with us.
There are just so many issues that we are striking for in Chicago that aren't mentioned in the news. I'm just going to speak on one.
The attacks on veteran teachers need to stop. The harassment of veteran teachers by administrators and the use of the REACH evaluation has added to the loss of teachers in the school system.
The use of VAM, junk science, should not be part of the evaluation. VAM was used for counting cows!
In addition, all schools are different. If students are in a failing school, they typically have a great amount of truancy, chronic tardiness, little to know parent involvement, social-emotional problems, poverty and a great number of students without the skill set appropriate to complete high school work.
There is no way a teacher in this school will get to show student growth like schools that are functioning. To hinge a professional career on the issues listed above is just completely wrong and unjust.
Students in schools like these come in with a negative concept of school and will refuse to take performance tasks (usually because they dont do well in school),play dumb on purpose , lack the ability to show what we've gone over thousands of times (low retention), are no shows for the exams, etc. They don't care and this makes the teacher look like they haven't done their job when they have.
Where is the parent and student accountability? When will someone take to task the administrators that use tactics to get rid of veteran teachers or those they don't like?
Unfortunately, many students are raising themselves. This means that teachers and students who want to learn are at the mercy of those who don't want to learn.
I don't know how many of you have seen a Twighgligt Zone episode with Bill Mumi possibly named "It"s a great day". The analogy I have created is that the school system is enabling a terror of a kid to wish the
teachers and staff out to the cornfield.
I don't mean to be on a soapbox but this just needs to be said.
One thing we need at the elementary level is more pay for our support staff. It's been so hard to get good teachers aides because we pay so little. I'm glad our union is making this a priority
Rahm emanuel’s war on public education has been catastrophic and felt every day and will continue to be for years to come. My anger runs very deep.
Amen!
Teacher autonomy
Any updates?? How’s it going on the picket line?
We are still out there going strong....some relief in sight. They have compromised on some issues but definitely not class size.
