Feeling strong growth in my current role (several promotions < 2y) but can't help but wonder what's out there. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the job - people are great, wlb is above average for the industry, and there's a strong path to AP relatively soon as compared to big 4.

Is it weird to think about exploring? Believe it or not, for what I do, MBB comp below AP isn't really THAT much better, but MBA sponsorship is attractive.

I don't want to go to industry, pace is too slow...

Plaintiff side question - comp is base plus % of fees. Firm has non equity split % with associate working on case. This normal for a non equity partner? Normal associate comp is full % when working with an equity partner.

I’m an associate attorney at a mid-size family law practice. (5 attorneys, 3 support staff). I’ve been here for 3 years and just asked for a raise to $130k from $90k. My annual billable target is 1400. However, since I’ve been here I’ve barely broken 1000 despite working my ass off. I bill out at $375. They told me no more raises unless I start taking my own cases. Now they just hired a new associate and are paying him $170k and he takes his own cases. Am I being unreasonable asking for $130k?

I was offered a partnership at a small firm I used to work at before my current also small firm. We had come to terms and I expected to inform my current firm. To my surprise, my current firm made me a significant offer to stay. Not a partnership, but making more money and better benefits. I’m torn because the other firm is under the impression I’m coming in as a partner. But I can’t turn away from the significant offer I have from my current firm, where I enjoy working. I need some words of wisdom from this esteemed bowl. I have been an associate for almost 2 years in civil litigation with my bread and butter being family and marital law. I have the drive and desire to operate a solo practice with an emphasis on family law as that is my most comfortable area. Putting in notice today at a very small firm that the owner wished for me to take over one day. It’s time, and it’s complicated, but according to former associates he’s acted completely unreasonable in response to associates leaving. Wish me luck.

I believe improving one’s sales conversion rate is something everyone want to improve but no one wants to admit they would like to work it. Funny how lawyers will spend thousands on seminars to improve trial skills. But this topic is not discussed in our profession. I have read books in sales. But am unable to find any for lawyers. Do small firms/boutiques really have better hours than Big Law? A recruiter told me I should still expect to bill 2000 hrs at a boutique, but if that’s the case, why take the pay cut?
