I've gone through stuff like this, and the absolute best advice I can give you is this:

First, you need to know and trust your partner. It is a professional marriage that can make or break you. If you don't know them and trust them with your professional life, don't partner with them.

Second, the whole needs to be more than the parts. There is no point in partnering if you won't make more with somebody else than you would alone.

So, basically, I'd suggest finding someone on your own as opposed to having the assistance of a third party. You need to know what you are getting into.

You can share some resources without forming a joint LLC. I would start by finding a potential partner that needs office space and either go in together or sublet on that. After a few years, you will have a much better idea of whether your work styles are compatible.

My firm started as a sublet to a bigger firm, and over the years, became of counsel to that firm to share work, brought in other sublets, partnered with them, unpartnered, etc.

No reason to immediately tie your fortunes together. We usually don't formally partner with anyone we haven't known for years, and the few times we did, it was a mess.

What’s your practice area and region? Looking to find someone in the same field or different field as your primary practice area?

Got it. Far from me. I’m in a similar boat. I don’t really want to merge with anyone, but I’d certainly consider an office share arrangement which could also lead to referrals and some kind of camaraderie that is otherwise absent when you’re a solo. Best of luck to you though!

Would talk to an attorney in Manhattan about that..

Hi Fishes,

My colleague's younger sister is looking for a job as a fresher. She has recently graduated ( and is pursuing US CMA. She's also done a couple of internships and is highly proactive and motivated. The family has been struggling to meet the ends specially due to Covid Pandemic.

Tried applying via Naukri and LinkedIn but there's hardly any response.
Can someone please refer her in their organization for a relevant role for a B.Com graduate. DM me for more details.

When you get a sell side report what are the things you look for in that report? One example I’ve heard is that making sure net income ties to the audited report. What else should I look for?

Ever read a transcript from a deposition you have taken and realized you have an annoying verbal tick? Boy I say okay a lot during questioning. Must remember and fix that.

Boutique transactional practice. Firm is growing post-COVID. Things are at risk of falling through the cracks. I need an easy way to track matters for status reports with colleagues in the firm without remaking the wheel.

Currently using Clio, which has its limitations for this purpose. I know colleagues that just use an excel spreadsheet.

Hello to All...Does anyone know an employment attorney whose licensed in NY and is knowledgeable of constitutional law? Your help is much appreciated..Thank you

Are there any real estate attorneys who have gotten into the title insurance business? What does that look like? Do you still carry on a private practice on the side?

Does anybody have a resource available for pricing and billing? I am 2 years out of law school, working as a corporate attorney, and wanting to go solo. Ideally, I will take my corporate client with me, but am working to build work on the side during the transition. Also, do you have any recommendations for document preparation? I would like to draft wills, trusts, and other estate planning documents, but would like a resource that has boilerplate provisions to utilize as a reference.

Anyone have any tips or advice on what to do when you’re representing a contractor who will receive membership interest in a startup company as compensation and the startup has expressed they do not have attorney to draft the company docs such as the membership transfer agreement and the amendment to the operating agreement? Nor do they have the funds.

Anybody interested in representing someone in an Article 78 proceeding against the city (nyc) to remove a fine (she was airbnb’ing her place while herself also living there, but the exact ground for the fine is a bit more complicated than that)?

Hi Everyone- I’m going solo soon after four years of being GC. Our company was sold to private equity so there wasn’t really much of a place for a GC anymore. I figured I would fulfill my lifelong dream of opening my own practice. ANYHOW- I have business and employment set up as my primary fields, but I’m curious what fields are fun, that would really lend themselves to solo work, or just be interesting to practice in. Thanks!

I have a college student wanting to intern at my new solo firm this summer. I totally can’t afford to pay her, but I also don’t plan on making her “work” but instead will teach her and add value through her internship experience. Is this permissible? Do I need to be cautious for any reason?

Anyone use a recruiter to find an associate? Having a hard time finding someone.

Hello! Any law firm marketing into the Spanish speaking community?

Atty as of July 2020. I planned to start a small firm with a fellow grad after school--then COVID happened. He continued forward with a solo crim def firm, and because I wanted to do business/startup law, I waited (again, COVID). I then got a job with the government (PSLF was appealing).

We gave this a lot of thought (incl. partnership agreement, business plan, etc.), and the itch is back.

Is it worth leaving the gov't and the PSLF gold handcuffs, or stay? Or should I wait for COVID to end?

I am awaiting my bar results and am working at the solo practitioner’s firm I was at all thru law school. My boss does strictly family law but has known since my first summer that my interest is personal injury, particularly med mal. Boss is allowing me (once licensed) to take PI cases and eventually med mal cases. I am essentially going to be building my own practice. I would appreciate any advice you might have for someone in my position. Thank you.

Is there a good reliable source for demand letter templates? I transitioned into my own practice from big law transactional work and don't have a nice repository of demand letters. Much of my solo work is dispute resolution which necessarily means I need to bulk up on my resources.

Managing attorneys in small firms - how much do you make?

I'm in South Florida. Currently a 6 year associate at a small firm (~12 attorneys, 55 staff). Making a move towards Managing Attorney position that they are considering hiring from outside the firm for. I'm going to make the case that they should promote from within and give me the position. I'm objectively a good candidate for it. Question is... what's a good salary for that position? What do you make? Thanks.

Thoughts...10+ years practical/management experience in/around legal field in FL (includes state government, in-house non-profit, civil practice, etc.). Two years ago took a job to relocate closer to where I want to be...but not sure if being valued and compensated appropriately. It’s a smaller firm, salary $75k, not too much in way of bonuses so maybe $5k, but always step up to plate with assisting management as leader for operational contributions and I meet annual revenue goals around $300k.

TL;DR: having trouble fitting in with the rest of the attorneys in my firm being super young compared to the rest of them. Not sure how to navigate.

Just started in June at a small firm where I’m the 7th attorney. I’m a K-JD and just passed the bar in August (🥳), making this my first real law job. The next associate is 10 years older than me. Everyone has spouses and at least one kid. All they talk about is said spouses and kids. I have none of that. Being social w/them is super hard. Help?

Just booked my honeymoon again for the 3rd time since Covid and trying to put a plan together for when I'm away. I don't have any deadlines on the dates I'm away, and I plan to check voicemail and email once a day.
For true solos, how do you manage vacations?
