I mean neither can men. I can work or I can stay at home.
I don't think the main point of the article is that you can't have it all. The main point is that these professions are expecting (and incentivizing) long hours - sometimes being on call constantly, and that has disproportionate impacts on men and women, especially those with a family.
I think it's quite accurate, both its depiction of biglaw expectations and, where applicable, consulting.
I don’t know why anyone is surprised; this is a natural human element of capitalism for capitalism’s sake. Although these studies do seem to complete discount the work/value being created by parents offsetting earnings to raise useful kids.
It makes sense but if both people in the relationship are successful wouldn’t it make more sense to simply hire a nanny?
Issue is one nanny is not enough. You might need 3-4 FTEs of nanny coverage (including overnights to enable travel) if both parents had this type of job. For me at least, it’s not the amount of travel overall, it’s the lack of predictability that would be untenable if my SO was in a similar role. That much childcare could easily be $150k/year, and also most people wouldn’t want to leave their children with the nanny team (vs a family member) Mon-Thurs.
