Some of my friends who are parents said they're not worried about covid because it's very low risk for children. They know I'm a teacher and that I'm in a high-risk category. Makes me feel like they don't care about me.

I’m sorry, but this just sounds like a little bit of a pity party. It IS a very low risk for children. Children are also not as likely to transmit the illness. (I didn’t say they don’t transmit it AT ALL...but the likelihood that you’re going to GET IT from a young child is low...low...LOW.) Of course, as you work with older and older students, the transmission rate starts to go up...but it’s still really low. I worry that people are SO frightened of this illness that they have an irrational perception of the risk to themselves. So, when others, who don’t hold a similar level of fear about the disease, share their seemingly apathetic perspectives, the fearful person becomes alarmed or emotionally reactive. These friends with children don’t need to live in constant fear, parenting is hard enough. Just because they don’t live in perpetual anxiety over COVID doesn’t mean they don’t empathize with those who are at “high risk” IF they get the illness. But frankly, it’s YOUR job to worry about your health...not theirs. I am considered to be in a “high risk” category for a couple of reasons. So I understand your anxiety. I’ve discussed it with my doctor and am following his advice as far as hygiene goes. He’s actually calmed much of my anxiety by putting things in rational perspective. I’m not overly concerned about face to face interactions with students in a controlled environment. I’m currently working in my classroom, as are about 80% of our teachers (we were given the option) and we’ve been holding face-to-face orientations with each of our students and one of their parents all week. We take precautions (masks, hand washing, hand sanitizers, spray disinfectant on all surfaces used during the meetings) and I think teachers who are doing these F-2-F orientations are realizing that it’s not going to be as impossible or as scary as they think. I don’t mean to disregard your feelings but maybe your anxiety is causing you to project your assumptions onto others unfairly? Good luck, hope you are able to continue on in peace.

Umm... @WHS1...I was NOT being incredibly rude or unsupportive. Nor was I “tearing anyone down.” YOU are being over dramatic and rude, however. My point was not to disregard the OP’s feelings, and I empathize with their feelings of anxiety (as I am in a similar situation). I’m simply pointing out that we can become irrationally fearful of something such as this and that talking to my own physician helped to put things in perspective and calm my fears. Additionally, as I and others work with our students F2F we are realizing this is going to be doable and not nearly as scary as we might have originally thought because of the controlled environment we will be working in. Her friends aren’t being “assholes” by stating that they aren’t worried about COVID making their children ill. I may not be overly worried about my children being involved in a school shooting either because the odds of it happening are extremely low. It doesn’t mean I don’t care at all about people involved in school shootings or have no sympathy for teachers who DO worry about it. For Christ’s sake. You are projecting assumptions onto others when you do that crap. As far as I could tell, her friends didn’t tell her to suck it up or get over it or even that they thought SHE was overly concerned. They made a statement about their concerns for their children. So maybe...just MAYBE...she might be reading more into their statement than they intended. Excuse me for pointing out that possibility.
