Some success, now what? I started a solo practice July 2020. I’ve been successful in building a book of business sufficient to satisfy my overhead and provide me with a respectable income. I want to grow my practice somehow, but I’m stuck at figuring out how. I do mainly corporate transactional work and some litigation. Any advice?

I’m in a similar boat and have been going through a soul-searching exercise of what is it that I really want to do. Have seen others in similar positions decide to grow by retraining attorneys, recruiting fresh out of law school, hiring ex-biglaw attorneys, adding paralegals, experimenting with tech, etc. I think it really depends on what kind of firm you want to have and how you want to get there.

I’m happy to bounce ideas and share my experiences. Ironically, working with our web design agency really forced me to answer a lot of these questions. I’ve had some good luck with contract attorneys, mostly from my existing network, but it’s been tough to source good ones. If you’re interested, DM me and I can share my b/g and maybe we can jump on a quick call.

Thanks! Any idea which ones may be better than others? Feel free to DM if that’s easier.

How did you get clients,m

Variety. I’ve been practicing for 10 years. Have a big network and my last gig was GC.

I’m doing very well where I am, book of biz is thriving, but the allure of working at a larger company than my small company seems like a great resume builder. I’m not sure where I want to be in 5 years, but this seems like a good way to make myself more appealing. I’ll have to rebuild my book of biz, which means pay cut.

Hello Everyone,

I have 4.3 YOE currently and I was offered Engr II - Full Stack position in VDSI. But after doing some research it seems Engr II is usually for YOE between 2 and 4. Is this correct? Will there be a problem for me if I take up this position with my YOE?
Since I am a lateral entry, I think promotion to Engr III also would take a lot of time.

Also can you please let me know the current designation hierarchy in VDSI?

I really feel like I’ve been dealt a really bad hand in my life. It feels like no one gives me a chance. Whether it’s a job I know I’m qualified for, or someone I’m interested in. Even things that appear to be good at first end up sucking. I know I should be grateful for what I have and that so many others are less fortunate. But I still can’t help but think that for a person in my position, given the opportunities that I was given, I am just a complete failure and nowhere near what I could be.

I now have a potential client who is ready to litigate a dispute in different area of the law (a simple tort matter). My partners aren’t keen on taking case as it’s outside the firm’s practice area. Our firm is growing fast and we need to add another attorney to keep up with the work. Our compensation package is 20-30% higher than what others firms in our area are offering. However, I’m still finding it difficult to get qualified associate to even apply for the position. I think part of the problem may be because we are located in a mid-sized city rather than a major metro area. Met Life Legal Plan has been a recent add. I have picked up a few probates, but have to bill for endless consults and doc review that yield less than 120$ per transaction which is not doing it. There is a category for up to 400$ for 4 hrs for items not covered. Have any used that category or I am being too conservative in submissions for billing.

I’m seriously considering starting up a solo shop. I have a very reliable stream of business (family friend has one patent that was infringed multiple times, huge firms have taken a few of these on contingency). Pros: I don’t have law school debt; I could follow these large firm’s general trajectory in prosecuting these cases; high risk tolerance (no kids, mortgage, etc). Cons: I’m inexperienced generally (class of 2019), and not familiar with patent law specifically. Thoughts?
